I tried my first free verse a few days ago, and, I guess it's OK,

I have personally been in half a dozen light houses from Main to the Gulf Coast. I was amazed at some of the things I discovered. For instance, the wick in one of the light houses was enormous, about the size of a large rope. The stairs in another were so steep it was like climbing a shaking ladder. The reflective dome behind the wick in one was about the size of a 12 foot mirror.
The earliest lighthouse? Wouldn't that be the Colossus of Rhodes in theory?

This piece hits home because of this one paragraph:
Damn't , he thought to himself, I shouldn't have sent a rookie to begin with. I should have sent Jim. He's been over here three times now and says he is taking another tour when this one is over. Then there's Brady. His wife left him while he was on his first tour and he vowed he wouldn't go home again. He said if he left the service he would become a mercenary. Weems understood, because his wife took off with someone else while he was on his second tour. He made the service his life. I've only been shot twice, so I'm doing pretty good for an old man.
Truth is, my first wife did the same thing and left me on my 2nd tour in Vietnam, I decided then to make a career in the Army. You'd be surprised how many professional soldiers started out this way.

I recommend you break it into smaller paragraphs for easier reading.
