Review of My Dad's Poem, "Old Soldiers" Reimagined

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (5.0)
Jay,

This is a heartfelt tribute that carries both gratitude and reverence. I especially appreciated how you transformed the original poem into something far more polished and lyrical while preserving its central message. The consistent rhyme and meter give it a ceremonial quality, making it feel well suited to remembrance services or memorial gatherings.

The opening stanza immediately establishes respect for aging veterans, and I found the image of their bodies bearing the marks of war particularly moving. Your third stanza effectively reminds the reader that freedom came at a tremendous cost, while the final two stanzas broaden the poem into a reflection on Christian sacrifice and hope.

The comparison between the soldiers' sacrifice and Christ's sacrifice is handled with sincerity and clearly reflects your faith. Whether a reader shares those beliefs or not, the conviction behind the words is unmistakable.

One line that especially stayed with me was:

"Their bodies show the foe they tamed."

It is a powerful image that says much with very few words.

Thank you for sharing a poem that honors those who served while reminding us that remembrance should never be limited to a single day. It is a respectful and heartfelt piece.

Well done.

Seb

Review of Passing Things On

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (4.5)
This was a wonderfully unsettling story. It begins as a quiet tale about inheritance and sorting through a lifetime of possessions, but gradually shifts into something far more mysterious. I liked how the ordinary details made the supernatural ending feel believable rather than forced.

The discovery of the hidden compartment was a perfect moment of tension. At first, I expected treasure or old documents, so finding only a simple hand mirror felt almost disappointing, until the final reveal. That twist completely changed the meaning of everything that came before it. Realizing the woman in the photograph was the narrator herself gave me genuine chills.

I also appreciated that you didn't overexplain the ending. Uncle Henry's final words open the door to countless possibilities, allowing the reader's imagination to do the rest. That's often far more powerful than providing every answer.
My only tiny suggestion would be to smooth a few sentences early on to tighten the pacing, but honestly, that's a minor point in an otherwise engaging piece.

A clever blend of mystery, supernatural fiction, and quiet suspense. The ending lingered with me long after I finished reading. Excellent work.

Review of GAIA (Mother Earth)

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (4.0)
This is a gentle and peaceful poem that captures the feeling of two souls finding comfort not only in each other, but also in nature itself. I especially liked how Gaia becomes more than a setting, she feels like a living presence, embracing and nurturing the lovers. The quietness throughout the poem creates a soothing atmosphere that matches its theme beautifully.

One small suggestion would be to smooth out a few phrases, such as "interwine" (which should be "intertwine") and "nuturing" ("nurturing"), as correcting those would make the poem flow even more naturally.

A tender and heartfelt piece that reminds us that sometimes silence speaks more deeply than words. Thank you for sharing.

Review of Straggler

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (5.0)
This is one of those poems that quietly unfolds with each reading. What begins as the voice of the last leaf clinging to a branch gradually reveals itself as a meditation on aging, loss, and the difficult grace of letting go.

Your imagery is exceptional. Lines such as "my skin, freeze-dried, discoloured, veins brown rivers" transform a simple autumn leaf into something deeply human. The parallel between the fragile leaf and an aging body never feels forced; it emerges naturally through carefully chosen details.

I also admired your restraint. You never tell the reader how to feel. Instead, you allow the empty wind, the vanished companions, and the growing transparency of the leaf to carry the emotional weight. That trust in the reader makes the poem all the more moving.

The closing line, "still learning to let go," is beautifully understated. It reaches beyond the seasonal prompt and becomes something universal. It is a sentiment that speaks not only for the last leaf, but for all of us as we face change, loss, and the passage of time.

If I had one small suggestion, it would be that "my final song so fitting" feels just a touch more explanatory than the surrounding lines, which are wonderfully subtle. Even so, it hardly diminishes the overall impact.

A beautifully crafted poem that turns an ordinary prompt into something quietly profound. One that lingers long after the final line.

Review of Simple spheres of romance

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (4.5)
This poem creates a dreamy, smoke-filled atmosphere that immediately draws the reader into a world where reality and imagination gently blur together. The opening is strong, establishing both mood and connection with just a few lines, and the surreal imagery—especially hanging from a chandelier and "terraforming the night"—gives the poem a distinctive voice.

What I appreciated most is that the poem isn't really about cannabis itself; it's about the shared experience of two people escaping ordinary life for a fleeting moment of intimacy. The closing image of the kiss dissolving into smoke brings the poem full circle and leaves the reader with a lingering sense of impermanence.

A few lines could be refined to make the imagery even stronger. Phrases such as "wearing the ambiance on her sleeve" and "daydream day" feel slightly awkward and momentarily interrupt the otherwise smooth flow. Likewise, "space in unreality" is an interesting idea, but it might carry more emotional weight with a more concrete image.

Overall, this is an imaginative and atmospheric poem filled with vivid visuals and romantic surrealism. With a little tightening of the language in a few places, it has the potential to become even more immersive and memorable.

Keep in writing

for entry "Catastrophic Empathy
Review by seb72Mail Icon

Sometimes you don't have to go through the exact same experience to understand someone. But when life takes something from you, even if it's only a small fraction of what someone else has lost, your perspective changes. You no longer see just a house swept away or a street submerged beneath floodwater. You see the photographs that will never be found again, the memories that no longer have a place to live, and the lives that must somehow be rebuilt. My own floods were small compared to what so many others have endured, but they taught me that the greatest losses are rarely measured in money. Some things can be replaced. Memories cannot. Perhaps that is how empathy is born, not because we have lived the exact same story, but because we finally begin to understand what loss truly means.

Review of STILL AROUND

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (5.0)
I really enjoyed reading this. More than anything else, it feels like hearing from an old friend who has finally found the time to sit down and share what has been on their heart. Your sincerity comes through in every section, and that is what kept me reading.

The repeated phrase "THERE IS HOPE" works well because it constantly brings me back to the central message. It isn't just a title or a refrain—it becomes the heartbeat of the piece and reflects the optimism you continue to hold onto despite the challenges you've faced.

I especially appreciated your openness about being away for so long and your determination to return to writing. Many writers experience seasons where life pulls them away, so I think a lot of people will recognize themselves in those words. Your honesty makes the piece feel genuine rather than simply inspirational.

The sections where you talk about your faith and your desire to encourage others clearly come from the heart. Whether someone shares your beliefs or not, it's easy to see that your motivation is kindness and a sincere wish to leave people feeling a little more hopeful than they did before they started reading.

If I could offer one suggestion, it would simply be to trust your strongest ideas a little more. There are moments where you repeat thoughts that have already made their impact. Trimming those sections slightly would allow your message to shine even brighter. A quick proofread for a few small typing errors would also help polish an already heartfelt piece.

Thank you for sharing this with us. I'm genuinely glad to see you writing again, and I hope this is the beginning of many more visits and many more stories. There really is hope—and your return is part of that.

This reads more like a meditation than a poem with a fixed destination. I really enjoyed the paradoxes, especially "a breath bereft of breath" and the closing lines, which leave the reader with a lasting sense of reflection. The idea that love simply exists, without needing hate to define it, is both refreshing and thought-provoking.

Some of the abstract passages are challenging, but I think that's part of the poem's strength, it invites the reader to return and discover new meanings with each reading. A deeply philosophical and intriguing piece.

Review of A girl named Ann

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (4.0)
This is a delightful little limerick that captures the playful spirit of the form. The rhythm flows smoothly, and the rhyme scheme feels natural, making it an easy and enjoyable read.

I especially liked the punchline. Ann's "plan" is both unexpected and amusing, and the idea of spending just an hour searching City Hall for a husband gives the poem a charming, tongue-in-cheek quality. It feels lighthearted without trying too hard.

If I had one small suggestion, it would be to check the fourth line. "Would scour" appears to be missing the "l" ("woud scour"), which I assume is simply a typo. Once corrected, the limerick reads very smoothly.

A clever, witty piece that delivers exactly what a good limerick should: a smile in just five short lines.

Review of THE RAINBOW CLOWN

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (4.5)
I'd give this 4.5 stars.

The poem is thoughtful, technically controlled, and carries a quiet emotional resonance.

What struck me most is how the clown becomes more than a performer. He feels like a symbol for anyone whose efforts go unnoticed despite giving everything they have. That universal layer gives the poem its emotional strength. The closing lines are especially effective because they shift from physical performance to an inner realization, leaving the reader with a lingering sense of quiet sadness rather than melodrama.

The rhyme and rhythm are generally smooth, and the imagery of the bustling marketplace effectively contrasts with the clown's isolation. Phrases such as "Fake frolic" and "His bright dance dulled, cheerless, awkward" vividly capture the exhausting act of pretending to be joyful while feeling invisible inside.

My only reservation is that the opening phrase, "In drab attire of ten fabrics," feels slightly abstract. I found myself wondering what "ten fabrics" specifically contributes to the image. A more concrete visual might help readers picture the clown immediately instead of pausing to interpret the phrase. Likewise, "Few glances did stop on his hide" sounds a little forced to satisfy the rhyme and momentarily pulls attention to the wording rather than the emotion.

Overall, this is a poignant, well-crafted poem that says something meaningful about recognition, purpose, and the loneliness of performing for an indifferent world. Its emotional restraint is one of its greatest strengths, allowing the final image to resonate long after the poem ends.

Keep writing, I enjoyed this one very much.

Review of Revelations

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (4.5)
This is a strong reveal scene that succeeds because it doesn't rush the emotional moment. The dialogue feels natural, and the storm provides an effective backdrop without overwhelming the conversation. The reveal of Maren pulling back her hood is cinematic, and the physical resemblance immediately gives the reader something tangible to believe.

What works particularly well is that Maren isn't simply introduced as "the sister." She comes with a history, motives, and uncertainty of her own. Her line, "He used us like tools, Darius. You for your power, me for my influence," expands the family conflict beyond a simple surprise twist and hints at a much larger story.

The ending is the strongest part. "I only knew what you were meant to be. And that terrified me." is an excellent closing line. It raises new questions instead of answering everything and makes the reader want to continue.

A couple of areas could be strengthened. Darius accepts the possibility surprisingly quickly after his initial disbelief. Even with the resemblance, a few more emotional beats, anger, confusion, or demands for proof, would make the revelation feel even more earned. Likewise, Elara and Rockford are present but mostly fade into the background after their initial reactions. Giving Elara another line or showing Rockford's behavior more distinctly could heighten the tension.

Overall, this is an engaging chapter with believable dialogue, good pacing, and a revelation that feels significant rather than forced. It leaves the reader eager to discover what their father is planning next.

My rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Review of Hole in the Sand

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (4.0)
This is a thoughtful little piece with a simple image that carries a lot of meaning. The hole in the sand becomes a comfortable place of our own making, while the rising water quietly reminds us that change is inevitable.
I especially liked how the narrator keeps reshaping the sand instead of leaving it, reflecting how easily we adapt to familiar circumstances even when we know they cannot last forever.
The writing flows naturally, and the ending leaves the reader reflecting on their own "hole in the sand."

Sometimes the quietest pieces say the most.

Well done.

Review of The Wreath

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (4.5)
Hi Omstar,

This is a beautifully structured story that uses the passage of time to show how a single object can carry the memories of generations. The wreath becomes far more than a Christmas decoration; it evolves into a symbol of resilience, family, tradition, and survival.

The chronological structure works exceptionally well. By moving through the years—1899, 1939, 1959, and 1999—you allow the reader to witness both social change and family history without ever losing the central thread. Each era has its own atmosphere and feels authentic, from Victorian poverty to wartime hardship and finally the modern day.

Your opening is especially vivid. The contrast between the wealthy shoppers wrapped in fur and velvet and the forgotten child in the doorway immediately establishes both setting and emotional weight. That imagery drew me into the story straight away.

The pacing is steady and deliberate. Rather than relying on dramatic action, the emotional impact grows naturally as each generation inherits the wreath and the memories attached to it. The ending is quietly devastating. The loss of both the grandmother and the wreath at the same moment is a powerful metaphor for the passing of an era, and replacing it with a funeral wreath is a fitting and poignant conclusion.

Technically, the writing is very polished. I noticed only a few very minor points;

"The sound of sirens were her lullabies." → The sound of sirens was her lullaby (or sirens were her lullabies, but "sound" is singular).

"belieing" should be "belieing"? Actually, the correct spelling is "belying."

"The storm was unexpected. Rain and wind kept people from their Christmas revelries." This transition feels slightly abrupt. One or two extra sentences foreshadowing the worsening weather would make the climax even smoother.

In a few places, the historical transitions could benefit from slightly stronger connective tissue, although the chapter-like dates already do most of the work.

What impressed me most is the restraint in the writing. You never overexplain the symbolism. The wreath quietly accumulates meaning with each generation until its disappearance carries genuine emotional weight. That subtlety makes the ending much more effective.

Overall, this is an elegant piece of historical flash fiction with strong imagery, excellent structure, and an emotional ending that lingers after the final sentence.

A memorable read.

Review of The Unexpected Alien Teilhaber CH02

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (5.0)
Hi Dark Knightmare,

Your Chapter two of The Unexpected Alien Teilhaber was presented to me via read and review.

This chapter continues to build the world in an engaging and believable way. The academy feels alive, with the classrooms, robotics lab, hydroponics facility, and dormitory all adding depth to the setting. The technology is imaginative without becoming overwhelming, and it is clear that a great deal of thought has gone into creating this universe.

The greatest strength of this chapter is the gradual development of Thomas and M'Sara's relationship. Their growing trust never feels rushed, and the cultural differences between humans and Katzen make their conversations interesting rather than predictable. M'Sara's feline mannerisms remain consistent throughout and give her a unique personality instead of making her feel like a human in a cat's body.

I also appreciated that you reveal more about Thomas's family background near the end. That revelation naturally raises the stakes and creates new questions for future chapters without relying on artificial drama.

There are places where the pacing could be tightened. Some conversations repeat the same emotional points or explain feelings that the characters have already demonstrated through their actions. Trimming some of those sections would make the emotional moments stand out even more. A few descriptive passages could also be condensed slightly to keep the momentum moving during longer dialogue scenes.

Overall, this is a very enjoyable chapter with excellent world-building, believable character growth, and plenty of curiosity to keep the reader invested. The ending leaves me wanting to continue reading, which is exactly what a strong chapter should accomplish.

A well-written continuation of an imaginative science fiction story. Nicely done.

Review of Ken and Mike Sherrill, Two Brothers

Review by seb72Mail Icon

This is a heartfelt tribute to two ordinary men facing extraordinary uncertainty. I like how you focus on everyday workers rather than heroes in the traditional sense, reminding us that courage is often found in simply showing up each day for one's family.

The steady rhyme and storytelling make the poem easy to follow, while the financial worries and uncertain future create genuine sympathy for Ken and Mike. Their devotion to their wives and children gives the poem its emotional center, and many readers will recognize the fears that come with an unstable economy.

A touching, relatable piece that honors the dignity of hard work and the resilience of family. Well done.

Review of Fall

This collection of haiku captures the gentle transition from summer to autumn with warmth and simplicity. Each stanza focuses on a familiar moment, from the welcome relief of cooler weather and the harvest season to colorful leaves, playful children, and the comforting aroma of homemade pies. Together they create a vivid seasonal journey that feels both nostalgic and inviting.

I especially enjoyed how the final haiku ties everything together by reminding us that these everyday moments become the memories we cherish most. The imagery is clear, the flow is smooth, and the poem leaves the reader with a sense of gratitude for the beauty found in ordinary life.

A delightful celebration of autumn. Thank you for sharing.

Review of Being the "2nd" is tiring.

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (5.0)
Hi Chelle,

This is a very honest and surprisingly insightful piece. What I appreciated most is that you didn't try to paint the speaker as entirely good or bad. Instead, you reveal a feeling many people experience but rarely admit openly: the silent competitiveness that can arise when someone else reaches a goal we wanted for ourselves.

The conversational style makes the poem feel personal, almost like a confession. I especially liked the line about forming an "invisible barrier" because it captures how disappointment can quietly affect relationships without the other person ever realizing it.

Your poem explores jealousy, ambition, and insecurity in a straightforward way that invites readers to reflect on their own experiences. Many of us have been in that uncomfortable position where admiration and resentment coexist, and you express that conflict effectively.

Thank you for sharing such a candid piece. It takes courage to write about emotions that people often keep hidden.

Well done, and keep writing.

Review of Curse of the eldest child

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (5.0)
Hi Chelle,

I'm glad I found your piece through Read a Newbie.

What struck me most is how much emotion you managed to convey with so few words. The eldest child is often seen as the strong one, the responsible one, the one who can handle everything. Yet your poem shines a light on the quieter reality behind those expectations—the loneliness, the pressure, and the feeling that no matter how much is given, it somehow never feels like enough.

The simple, direct style works well here because it mirrors the exhaustion and resignation behind the message. The repetition of "The eldest" reinforces the weight of the role and makes each observation hit a little harder.

I think many readers, whether they are eldest children themselves or not, will recognize some part of this experience. Thank you for sharing something so honest and relatable.

Keep writing, I look forward to reading more of your work.

Best wishes,
Seb

Review of Islam and Peace

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (5.0)
Frits,
This is an impressive and carefully constructed essay that sheds light on a largely overlooked aspect of Islam. What appealed to me most is that you do not fall into either apologetics or polemics; instead, you invite the reader to become acquainted with a historical figure who is too often forgotten: Abdul Ghaffar Khan.

The strength of this piece lies in its combination of historical facts, well-chosen quotations, and personal reflection. Khan emerges as an extraordinary individual who translated his faith into service, forgiveness, and nonviolence. By connecting his story to Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Erasmus, Ellul, and modern Catholic social teaching, you place him within a broader tradition of peace-oriented thought, which adds considerable depth to the essay.

I also appreciated the nuance with which you discuss Pashtun culture. You demonstrate that no religion or culture is one-dimensional and that the same environment can give rise to both violence and nonviolence. That is an important observation in a time when simplistic portrayals often dominate public discourse.

The conclusion is personal without becoming sentimental. Your admiration for Khan feels genuine and gives the essay a human dimension. The question of what his legacy ultimately achieved lingers in the reader’s mind and encourages further reflection.

One small point of criticism is that the essay occasionally relies heavily on quotations, causing the author's own voice to recede somewhat into the background. In a few places, a more extensive personal analysis could make the balance even stronger.

Overall, this is an informative, nuanced, and inspiring essay about a remarkable advocate of peace who deserves far greater recognition. It is a valuable contribution to interfaith dialogue and to the broader discussion of violence and peace.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 stars)

Frits,

Groetjes,

Seb

Review of Truth and Lies

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (3.5)
What I find particularly strong about this poem is how it presents a recognizable truth with very few words. The contrast between truth and lies works well: truth often needs little explanation, while lies must constantly be maintained and defended to remain standing.

The message is clear, timely, and universal. The final lines are especially powerful because they shift the focus from individual falsehoods to the manipulation of large groups of people.

A few words might perhaps be made more concise, but the poem's simplicity actually suits the subject very well. It's a short, effective observation that encourages reflection.

A heartfelt and deeply patriotic tribute that captures the sacrifice, courage, and dedication of American service members. The poem's elevated language and reverent tone create a strong sense of respect and remembrance. At times the abundance of grand descriptors makes the piece feel somewhat repetitive, but its sincerity and emotional weight remain undeniable. Review of My Private Whispers and Light Blog

for entry "The Chick Party
Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (5.0)
Hi Tee,

This was such an enjoyable read because it captures something that many people spend years trying to create but rarely succeed at: genuine shared memories. On the surface, this is a story about a themed party and a week-long chick-raising competition, but beneath that is a celebration of friendship, creativity, and the simple joy of bringing people together.

What stood out most was the way the narrative builds anticipation. The gradual reveal of the "special item" hidden inside the ventilated boxes is handled perfectly. You allow readers to experience the surprise almost exactly as your guests did, which makes the story engaging from the beginning. Once the chicks arrive, the piece takes on a delightful energy that carries through to the final paragraph.

I especially enjoyed the small details about how differently people responded to the challenge. The image of grown adults researching chick nutrition, building miniature homes, and becoming emotionally attached to their temporary feathered companions adds both humor and warmth. These moments transform the story from a simple recollection into something vivid and memorable.

Another strength is the balance between description and reflection. The account of the decorations, costumes, hay bales, tractor, and county-fair atmosphere paints a lively picture, but you wisely avoid letting the logistics overshadow the people. The heart of the story remains the friendships and the laughter generated by a shared experience.

The ending works particularly well because it shifts attention away from the contest itself. By admitting that you no longer remember who won but vividly remember the laughter and companionship, you reinforce the deeper message that the best gatherings are remembered not for prizes or outcomes but for the moments people create together.

If there is a central theme here, it may be that the most successful parties are not those with the biggest budgets or the fanciest decorations, but those that give people a story to tell. The Chick-a-Bitty Party clearly accomplished exactly that.

A charming, funny, and heartwarming piece that leaves the reader smiling while reminding us how powerful a little creativity can be in bringing people together.

Review of Water

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (4.5)
A thoughtful reflection wrapped in a simple metaphor.

At first glance, this piece seems to be about water, but it quickly becomes a meditation on patience, persistence, and the way true strength is often misunderstood.

I particularly enjoyed the contrast between water and rock. We tend to view the rock as powerful because it appears permanent, while water seems soft and yielding. Yet the poem reminds us that endurance can be more powerful than resistance. Given enough time, water succeeds where force often fails.

The brief detour into refined sugar also caught my attention. To me, it echoes the broader theme of appearances versus substance: society often prefers what looks cleaner, brighter, or more impressive, even when something less polished may hold greater value.

What stayed with me most was the final realization that water always finds a way, whether as steam, ice, or liquid. The form changes, but the nature remains the same. That idea gives the piece a quiet philosophical depth that lingers after the final line.

A short work, but one that invites the reader to think beyond its words.

Review of QUOTES AND WORDS OF WISDOM

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (4.0)
What I like most is that this quote doesn't pretend life is easy. It acknowledges that we all stumble, sometimes more than once, and reminds us that hope isn't about never falling, it's about finding the strength to get back up again.
The personification of Hope works well here. Instead of feeling like a distant concept, it feels almost like a quiet friend standing beside you, saying, "Keep going, you've got another chance."
The wording is straightforward, which suits the message. There are no complicated metaphors or grand statements, just a gentle reminder that setbacks don't define us unless we let them.
A short piece of wisdom, but one that carries a message many people need to hear from time to time: no matter how many times life knocks you down, hope is what helps you stand up again. 🌟

Review of Queerness and A-levels: A disappointment

Review by seb72Mail Icon
Rated: E | (4.5)
This was a fascinating and thought-provoking read.

What stayed with me most is not even the subject itself, but the sense of disappointment running through the entire piece. You went into these courses expecting to learn about a part of human experience that matters deeply to you, only to discover how often it was overlooked, minimized, or treated as an afterthought.

I think what makes this work so effective is that it never feels like a rant. There is frustration here, certainly, but it is supported by research, examples, and personal experience. You don't simply say that something is missing—you show where it is missing and why that absence matters.

I was particularly struck by the discussion of history. The contrast between the attention given to other social movements and the lack of meaningful coverage of LGBTQ+ history raises questions that are difficult to ignore. The references to the Lavender Scare and other historical events added real weight to your argument.

What I also appreciated is that this piece goes beyond representation. At its core, it is about education. The argument is not that LGBTQ+ topics should be included simply because they exist, but because leaving them out creates an incomplete picture of the subjects themselves. That point came across very strongly.

The amount of independent research you carried out is impressive as well. It is hard not to admire the determination behind that. You clearly cared enough about the topic to keep looking for answers when the curriculum failed to provide them.

A well-researched and passionate essay. Whether readers agree with every point or not, it certainly gives them something to think about. I learned a few things myself while reading and appreciated the effort that clearly went into both the research and the writing.
