i always enjoy a good name poll. i feel that names are one of the most important and difficult things to perfect in writing. i have dozens of name books and websites bookmarked, so i understand your struggle.
i chose austin because it isn't a super-usual name like larry, it's not plain like jay, or unusual like ephram. it doesn't immediately evoke any imagery, so it's the kind of name one can bend to their needs. you need him to be meek, that name can adapt to that.
gabe seems to be the most voted for so far, but i don't agree with that choice because gabe is short for gabriel, an angelic name. gabe denotes a stronger personality. one pictures someone blonde, square-jawed, and heroic. if your charater is going to emerge from his coocoon and become a hero then maybe gabe would work, it would forshadow your character's future heroics. but that's just my opinion.
