It felt plot driven (with an internal drama) with pace that gradually picked up at first, but seemed to move faster from the point that Katherine thought she might be in a dream. As the story developed, it felt like the character development piece of this story was mostly in the surprise ending.
I think this story possesses the literary quality that's supposed to be unique to flash fiction--that this story hints at a larger story.
I really like this poem. Captures our cultural climate to a tee.
As a reader, the last line is the only one that didn't work for me...I found myself mentally playing with ways to turn the line into a statement--such as: "Americans starve for acceptance" or "Why Americans starve for acceptance"
The way you have it may communicate exactly what you want to communicate; just sharing my musings...This is definitely a poem that both entertains and makes the reader ponder...
