"Stolid Writer" is an excellent poem with a fine story and message as well. stolid Writer likes to write, but only non-fiction. He nevertheless attends a poetry workshop, because his wife gave him this as a gift, and he did not wish to upset or offend her, and discovers that it is much to his liking, and not too bad after all. The poem weaves in different poets and some works of poetry as well: "He saw how Frost was almost lost / when stopping by a wood." Word choice is good and the flow is spot on. The ending is powerful and strikes a cord. Kudos to a fine effort here.
"In Lieu of Faith and Magic" is a wonderful 24 Line poem which packs a punch and is very well written. It tells the story of someone interviewed for a position of Editor for a Science magazine, but it not technically qualified. However, he gets the position anyway, due to the basic methodology of mind that is essential to the endeavor of science, and that it open-mindedness, free inquiry, logic and respect for evidence--in other words, the truth. References to Einstein, Hawking, and Carl Sagan are included, and even Aristotle, who posited one of the foundations of logic and reason: "and of course Aristotle espoused A is A." The poem can be summarized in a nutshell by these two lines: "But he knew he had something that science reveres; / a regard for the truth with no bias or fears." Exceptional stuff here, right on target, highly recommended.
A well-written tribute to the Wright Brothers, good word choice and phrasing. Love the cosmic fugue, and how mankind stands upon their shoulders. Write on. (Nice visual presentation too.)
