He wanted to be on the cutting edge of the newest food fad...
Toby Hall walked in front of the meat case again, checking out the selections on display and the prices. The man behind the counter seemed judgmental and arrogant, despite the fact that he was merely the butcher. Though he could barely afford the price of membership, Toby wanted to be on the cutting edge of the newest food fad and to impress his new girlfriend, Brittany. He planned cooking her a special, intimate Valentine Day dinner and giving her a dozen roses. He didn't have any cookbooks for any of this stuff, but supposed that it wasn't much different that normal beef or chicken. In fact, someone had told him this stuff tasted like chicken.
The butcher cleared his throat and slowly moved his eyes to the large clock on the wall. “I’ll be closing soon.”
Toby glanced the prices again and ambled toward the far end of the counter, to the less expensive cuts. “I”ll take a pound of those.”
“Just a pound?” The man moved toward him and looked down.
Toby didn’t miss the sarcasm. “I’m a new member. I haven’t ... decided if this is to my ... taste yet. I’ll try some things first. And I’m starting with ... “
“Finger-food. The cheap cuts.”
Toby reached into his pocket for some money. “I like to experiment.”
“I know that you can’t afford anything else. Barely made the membership fee, probably. Let me tell you something; I don’t have much patience with members like you. I try to sell the best here, choice cuts. But because of you people, I have to stock the cheap stuff. I don’t like it. If you can’t afford the breast or thigh or heart, then you can’t be a member is my opinion.”
“Want to see my card?” Toby asked.
The man weighed the meat on the scale and said, “One pound. Fifty dollars. Cash.”
Toby shook his head. “That’s really outrageous.”
“Outrageous? Do you know what I have to go through to get this counter full? Do you know what the police would do to me if I didn’t have the money to pay the right people?” the man said. “I’ll tell you this; it’s members like you that give the new cannibalism a bad name.”
