Baby Steps

A baby's first steps

One of two attempts at writing something from the perspective of a baby (the other is "First Entrance" )

On shaky legs but even ground
I try to take my steps.
I’ve seen them do it – walk around
but easy, without effort.

My steps are awkward, stilted
even on the flat.
All too often tilted
and lying on the ground.

But no, I’m up once more,
and this time helped.
I bobble across the floor
into safe arms.

I turn and I am fine:
back across the room.
Almost a straight line
back to base.
