a friendship that had been close but is now so very far apart . . . and silent

what is said with the silence

the silence has gone on
unintruded for years now
no words have been spoken
asleep in our thoughts
disturbed but not fully awoken

i still wonder what is said
with the very silence itself
for even silence says much
beyond the spoken word
though not realized as such

so long has it been now
distant from each other’s view
that we are now near strangers
passing upon a crowded street
with foreboding of some danger

what is it that we now fear
that did not exist in time before
has the past refused to fade
the consequences before us
decisions that were once made

do we fear to speak of them
now that we see what they have
… if they have anything at all
that touches upon some meaning
of the memories we each recall
