Forever in the Night

My first Villanelle.

Trying to follow that distant light,
The one that promises me eternal bliss,
I escape away, forever in the night.

Having accomplished what I thought I might,
Though at times it left me quite amiss,
Trying to follow that distant light.

I took my longing for success to a new height,
Allowing less than perfectness to dismiss,
I escape away, forever in the night.

Looking back at my life's whole flight,
Longing to forget all that was meaningless,
Trying to follow that distant light.

Having always done what I thought was right,
So I wouldn't regret a thing when it came to this,
I escape away, forever in the night.

Now as I get closer to that ember burning bright,
I've accepted what I will soon miss,
Trying to follow that distant light,
I escape away, forever in the night.
