Understanding retribution... is it avenge or revenge?

Understanding Retribution...

The word is avenge,
It means take revenge;
Retribution – a payback of sorts…
The word’s overused
And very abused
In our lives – as the news now purports.

They come after us –
We put up a fuss;
Then with payback we come after them.
They started the fight –
Now we’re in the right
For their morals we scorn and condemn…

“Thy vengeance is mine!”
They shout and define
With their right hand upon the ‘good book’;
“With God on our side
We’ll kill for His pride
We don’t trust in your gobbledygook”…

So fighting occurs
And killing transfers
To the innocents of our campaigns.
They’re smack in the way –
They are everyday
So the hatred – it always remains…

We’re taking a life!
A husband or wife!
Not to mention the children involved –
With venomous wrath
We follow a path
Where our morals have fully dissolved…

So when will it stop?
How can hatred drop
When we’re constantly shouting avenge?
Our arrogance reeks –
So plainly it speaks
Of a most primal instinct – revenge…
