A small ditch separated the terrified man from the snarling beast crouched on the other side.  He turned, hoping to escape.  The beast sprang, knocking him down and...

The man sat bolt upright in bed, heart racing.  "It's okay, Rudy - bad dream," he said shakily, patting the form next to him.

The dog growled softly.
