Essay about the real threat to the U.S. economy and political standing in the world.

The real threat

The United States went all the way to Afghanistan and Iraq in order to bring democracy to those distant lands. However, the real threat is much closer to home. Our foreign policy has been mismanaged. Nobody in power seems to understand that Hugo Chavez will bring more trouble and tension in the near future than Iran’s Ahmedinejad or the Taliban.

Barack Obama is ready to take the reins of power, but we have seen little evidence that he understands Latin America. His only statements regarding Colombia belied a misunderstanding of the situation in that country. Alvaro Uribe might be the only real friend we have south of Mexico. But Obama stated that he opposes any economic aid to that embattled government. Uribe is at this very moment trying to dismantle the guerrillas supported by Hugo Chavez.

Latin America has been in turmoil for decades. Fidel Castro supported the leftist uprisings with money given to him by the Soviet Union. When he lost the support of the Soviets, Castro stopped giving money to the guerrillas. They found a convenient source of funds in the drug trade. The drug lords needed protection and the guerrillas needed money. That alliance made life difficult for legitimate governments throughout the continent.

When Uribe came to power he had to confront not only the guerrillas from the left, but also the paramilitary groups that had been formed to resist them. He was forced to ask the United States for help, because the guerrillas had too much money and weapons—and Hugo Chavez. Bush came to his aid, but Obama, to judge from his previous statements, might oppose U.S. support. That would be a grave error.

We can only hope that cooler heads will prevail and that the team he has assembled to help him govern has a more enlightened view of continental realities. Hugo Chavez is not a threat to be ignored. By word and deed he has expressed his hatred of the United States. He has joined forces with Ahmedinejad and the Putin. You shall be judged by the company you keep.
