Chief Joseph was the chief of the Wal-lam-wat-kain (Wallowa) band of Nez Perce
Chief Joseph they say
died of a broken heart.
One cold autumn day,
his spirit did depart.

Died of a broken heart
in a prison reservation
forced forever to depart
from The People's nation.

One cold winter's day
his tears finally dried.
His life slipped away,
another real hero died.

His spirit did depart,
lies fell on deaf ears.
No more promises to impart
about peaceful years.
