Bittersweet

So long ago, my how time’s flown.
Now I look back over the years
and think of all the loves I’ve known,
of all the joys and all the tears.
In my minds eye I picture you.
The memories submerge my mind,
within in haze of misty blue,
reminders of the hurt unkind,
that loving you had done to me.
It is long gone, it could not stay.
No, it was not supposed to be
and life goes on or so they say.
Our lives moved on, forgot the tears.
Time conspired, kept us apart
but darling you, throughout the years
ever had a piece of my heart.
