Poem I wrote my Mother a few years ago, it is about our relationship
“This Child’s Heart”

Walls defend this Child’s Heart

The walls have been under-construction from the start

There were no bridges, no doors, not even a crack.

The eyes and ears did the building, and that’s a fact

The eyes saw things, but didn’t confirm

Just sent it to this child’s heart to see it squirm

The eyes saw more love dealt out for others

The walls grew larger and started to smother

The ears didn’t care if they only heard partials

They still sent it to this child’s heart, to arm its arsenals.

The Ears would accept what they called criticizing

Of course, sent right to this child’s heart so it would quit trying

But the eyes and ears can only deceive,

if the child’s heart is willing to believe.

This is the truth this child’s heart had to accept

If promises of reconciliation would ever to be kept

My mother saw the four year old she had lost

Not wanting to accept the years that it cost

This child’s heart didn’t try understanding

Just ran away not even caring

How many times had I repeated this action

The count is unknown and without satisfaction.

My mother saw the four year old she had unwillingly lost

I now see the years I had so easily tossed.

This child’s heart is trying once again

For you see, Mother and daughter are NOT giving in

Through out the years this child’s heart grew weak and weary

Not knowing what to do and always fearing

What if I’m not good enough, what if I don’t measure up

Will she get tired or just fed up

Then one day out of the blue

Came a redheaded mediator that knew what to do

She pointed out the traits that we both shared

Also pointed out differences neither one of us dared

The differences weren’t as big as this child’s heart thought

I am her daughter and this child’s heart was all she sought

I am loved and accepted for just being me

The walls have came down it was easy you see

With my mother’s love I am the best me I can be
