The Octopus

A walrus and an octopus would not make good friends.
The walrus with his titanic tusks:
Watching television on the couch,
Never washing the dishes,
Never cleaning the laundry,
Never removing his fallen hair
from the shower.

The octopus with his octad of arms
Suctioning up loose articles
That are strung about their small apartment:
The good student,
The loyal friend,
The obedient citizen.
Always a meticulous, anal-retentive
Glutton for attention,
Greedy for the favor of others,
The glory,
The praise and
The bigger paragraph.
He may expect that this scribbling
Be devoted to his memory.
