You say you've shed a tear for me,
I doubt not that is true.
I loved you once. You were my friend.
I knew you hung the moon.

Your wit was keen, your words - so soft,
Your person simply grand.
Your heart loved deep, your motives pure,
You even held my hand.

And on first glance I thought I found
A match as true can be,
But as life stole the time we had,
I knew it couldn't be.

The days did pass, my thoughts did drift,
My heart was left to stray,
And to that end, my love did fade,
On such a summer's day.

And to those tears that fall anew,
And open doors of woe,
I simply say, I loved you once,
And couldn't have loved you more.
