One Red Reflector

Pounding down the Interstate, I'm
Driving hard 'n' still running late
And the sunset finally settled down
Around a quarter after eight.

         And I know I must've given this
         Exhausted little engine about
Half the care that it deserves and
         Twice what it can take.

But at ninety miles an hour
In the middle of the night,
                   There's a shadow of forever
At the edge of the headlights.

Oh but why, why --
Things were simple, oh so easy,
Couldn't I have lied?
Grabbed the keys and stabbed the gas again
And drive...I've tried
To turn the wheel away until tonight.

When one red reflector shined
In a thousand miles of white.

Come wind and rain, oh come what may,
I'm coming home to me today.
Through hell and heartbreak made my way,
So bring me back, I'm coming home to stay.

                   Pounding down the Interstate, I'm
Driving hard 'n' still running late
And the sunset finally settled down
                   Around a quarter after eight...

(repeat chorus)
