|Before I joined Adventures & Outings (A & O), I explored other social groups, but found them to be inaccessible by destination and the lack of transit. A & O was the only program that would take me to many adventurous destinations while accommodating my needs. Aside form the promise of amazing experiences; A & O’s commitment to provide transportation lured me in.
The day a friend told me about Bay Area Outreach & Recreation Program’s Adventures & Outings my world opened to possibilities that I only saw in my dreams.
I had always dreamed of seeing the elephant seals at Año Nuevo State Preserve, going whale watching at Half Moon Bay’s Pillar Point, and doing a bird walk at Cosumnes River Preserve. As fate unfolded, Adventures & Outing took me to Año Nuevo, where I witnessed the grunts and groans of two gigantic male elephant seals before taking battle over a female. Soon after I found myself in Pillar Point, learning that Nature’s opportunity of observation is left to chance. My first trip proved fruitless, so with my desire to see live whale only whetted, I had to find out if Nature would allow me to witness a treasured moment. Once again, A & O was there to bring my dreams to fruition. Wow, what a moment it was when I saw effervescence from a whale’s blow-hole; then, a second later the tail fin seemed to wave at me. Finally, my ultimate moment in Nature (so far) was when A & O went to the Cosumnes River Preserve where I witnessed thousands of Sand-hill cranes flying in to roost at dusk. The trumpeting sounds of the cranes left me awestruck.
An adventure that I never imagined experiencing was riding an accessible carriage at Rush Ranch. The horse drawn carriage was fully equipped with a solar powered hydraulic lift to board our manual and power wheelchairs. We toured Rush Ranch as the sound of the Percherons’ trot soothed our ears. It was an amazing introduction to Access Adventure.
Adventures & Outings not only enables participants to take these awesome trips in Nature, but A & O also enriches our lives by taking us camping, visiting museums, and appreciating culture through festivals, wine tastings, and Broadway plays.
Words cannot articulate my gratitude for Adventures & Outings. The bond and spiritual connection that we participants feel toward each other and the world is a treasure trove of experience.
