Young Adult (YA) Submission Guidelines
** Please send the synopsis with the first 3 chapters attached. **
** We will contact you if we would like to read more. **
We're looking for well-written stories with strong, complex characters and intriguing storylines that support a healthy balance between the characters' inner and outer journeys.
What we require:
'Main characters should be high school age, 15-18 years old.
'All genres and sub-genres are acceptable (romance, humor, contemporary, historical, fantasy, etc.).
'Subject matter should be relevant to today's youth. However, controversial issues must be treated with sensitivity and be essential to the character's inner growth.
'Point of view — can be in either first or third person.
'Good characterization — characters must be real and three-dimensional.
'Stories must have a strong opening hook (no flashbacks, excessive back story or long, elaborate narratives).
'Clean writing—no typos, misspelled words, grammar errors (put it through spell check/grammar check before sending it to us).
'Manuscripts should be single spaced with one inch margins all around, paragraphs indented .3, in a doc/docx file.
'Stories must be divided by chapters. For consistency, scene breaks should be divided by 3 asterisks (***).
'Stories should be a minimum of 40,000 words to a maximum of 100,000 words.
'Can be part of a series or a 'stand-alone' book.
What we won't accept:
'Nothing sexually gratuitous — use your judgment, we want to be relevant to today's youth, but we don't want to promote underage sex.
'No foul language
'No gratuitous violence
'No smoking, alcohol consumption or drug usage by the main characters (secondary characters are permissible, but only if it is essential to their character or the story).
'No stories with excessive introspection — characters can't grow by talking to themselves!
'Characters can profess to have faith, but NO religious or anti-religious themes.
So, if you haven't heard from us within 3 months, please assume we have decided not to publish your work.
Please send us just the first 3 chapters of your writing. Don't worry, if we're eager to see more, we'll definitely be in touch!
Submissions should be clearly labelled with your full name and contact details, written in English, typed, double line-spaced, and with numbered pages.
Furthermore, we will no longer be able to send work back to anyone (even if you do enclose a stamped addressed envelope, it takes a lot of time to fill envelopes!).
Please email your work to: email@example.com
