My friends react to my winning.

When I gambled one day at Casino Capri,
I was happy good fortune attended to me.
For when I pulled the slot machine handle that day,
a fine trio of lemons allowed it to pay.

I stood way in the back at the final machine
where a river of coin made a silvery scene.
As I looked to my friends who were milling about,
I commanded their presence when I gave a shout.

I had four friends that day--or so that’s what I thought;
but reactions were mixed like legumes in a pot.
The reaction I first noticed came from Chlorine,
who was acting so envious--her face glowed green.

Then I looked away from Chlorine to notice Burn,
(it’s amazing from expressions what you can learn.)
Burn was gritting his teeth and from what I recall,
had both fists clenched up tight as he stalked down the hall.

So I then turned to Shrug who was standing in back
to see if his response would be likewise as black.
Yet all Shrug offered me in my time of hurrah
was an unfeeling gaze as he said, “Que Sera.”*

Thus at last I was touched by true feelings from Blue
who with heart simply said, “I am happy for you.”
It was there near a slot machine far at the end
when I finally learned the true meaning of friend.
