One American

For my Pop, my husband and all former and currently serving US military personnel.

I am only one American,
but I have been caressed by war.
I haven’t been a service member.
I’ve been to the VA before.

You men and women in uniform,
being all that you could be,
offered your lives up for my freedom,
and that means the whole world to me.

I’ve seen the confidence you exude,
and the dignity in your eyes.
As you proudly display our colors,
your valor cannot be disguised.

Bravery boldly held you strong
at your physical battle lines.
A toast to all U.S. Veterans:
let each one of us raise our steins.

I am only one American,
with many heartfelt thanks to give.
I pray for the souls of our warriors lost,
and I honor those who live.
