"P.S. I Love You" by Miranda Neville
Christian's cousin Frank is in love, but he's not good with words, so he enlists Christian's help in writing letters to his lady. The lady is disappointed when Frank is so different in person, and when she realises the duplicity, she knows Christian is the man she has really fallen in love with. Christian has too much honour to steal his cousin's girl though - doesn't he?

I didn't like that so much was made of Christian's honour, and then he slept with the girl before telling Frank he would even try for her affections. Frank was a good sport in the end, but it felt poorly handled. Unsatisfying.

"When I Met My Duchess" by Caroline Linden
This is what the blurb said:
'Gareth Cavendish, Duke of Wessex, believes he’s chosen the perfect bride… until he meets her sister and lightning strikesβ€”literally! Now he’s the only member of society dreading the wedding of the season. Or is he?'

I was really curious to know about that part - 'lightning strikes - literally!' but it was nothing. Not even worth mentioning in the blurb. The Duke settled for a 'suitable' wife, then fell in love. Nothing new there, and it wasn't told in a novel way. Much of a muchness with so many similar books.

****

I finished the fourth novella in the anthology, not because I enjoyed the anthology, but because I wanted to hit 10 books for September!

After three Regency novellas, with nothing even remotely supernatural in them, they throw in a time travel novella? Really? *Sick* I'm not a fan of time travel stories at the best of times, although they can be enjoyable if done well, but seriously? To throw one in to a storyline that is already set? All four novellas take place at the house of the Duke of Wessex, as he prepares for his wedding. The H/h of novellas 1, 2 & 4 are his guests. So the scene is well and truly set by the 4th novella, but suddenly we have a modern miss who time travels to the wedding? Um, no. It wasn't a good anthology to start with and it finished on a completely ridiculous note.

I vow not to read any novellas next month, unless they're by authors I already know and love. This was a lesson I clearly had to learn the hard way!

Horus Rising ISBN =-13: 978-1-84970-111-2

Part of the Horus Heresy Series

Horus Rising follows the story of Garviel Loken as he progresses from common captain to part of the mournival, the advisory council of the Primarch Horus leader of the great crusade of mankind Through glorious battles and self-sacrifice, Loken proves his worth as an Astartes, the genetically engineered warriors of the Emperor. In a fight for his life, he encounters the true horrors of the warp. The encounter leaves him reeling and only the Primarch Horus can alleviate his fears and complete his understanding.

My Favourite Quote.

I have none, the writing was simple and the story basic, I only read this as it is a backdrop to the game I play. The book wasn't bad, don't get me wrong but it didn't have any inspiring quotes.

Galaxy In Flames

ISBN 978-1-84970-325-3

Part of the Horus Heresy Series published by Black Library

Galaxy in Flames continues the story of Garviel Loken, Company Commander of the 10th legion and member of the mournival, the inner circle of advisors to the Primarch Horus.

After recovering from the injuries he sustained on Davin, the Primarch Horus leads the Imperial Forces of Man to the rebel world of Isstvan III. After carefully selecting the men he is unsure will stay loyal, Horus sends them to fight on Isstvan III. The rebellion is easily crushed and it is only then that Horus' treachery is revealed. He bombards the planet with virus bombs killing all inhabitants including his own men.

This book narked me off because it gave away the virus bomb plot in the blurb, so freakin' annoying.

The Heat is On by Jill Shalvis.

This is the story of Bella and Jacob. Bella has never really felt she belonged and she has had the travelling bug since she was old enough to be out on her own. The moves to Santa Rey and finds she feels safe there. She signs on for eight dates in eight days and finds guy number eight to be, quite possibly the guy that might be a keeper. That is if he can convince himself he is worthy on long term. Hot steaminess - this book has, but it also has mystery. Someone is killing off her earlier dates.

My favourite quote:
"He refused to run. But he walked very fast into the kitchen, realizing what he was. "I'm a piece of ass."

This book has 219 pages.

It was The Husband List by Janet Evanovich and Dorien Kelly.

I enjoy reading Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. In this novel she co-writes with Kelly. It is quite an excellent read.

In this tale, a British 'almost duke' is in need of money and sets his sights on an American heiress. The problem - this American heiress is already in love with her brother's best friend, Jack. As she follows her family's desire to be linked with British arosocracy, she also wants to marry for love. The 'almost duke' wants her only for her money and he is highly suspicious. Jack wants to protect her and in the process of all that he discovers that he is in love with her as well. The mother is as frustrating as Mrs. Bennett in Pride and Prejudice. She fails to see the unsuitableness of the match and does her best to push her daughter into the wedding.

My favourite quote:
"I passed Annie on the lane a way back." He paused. "Did you know goats can pull a cart?"
She laughed. "She bartered sapphires for goats?"

The heiress has sent her maid to find a way to travel away from the 'almost duke's' residence. This is what she is able to find.

The book has 330 pages.

Blame It On The Bikini by Natalie Anderson. Yes, another romance.

This is the story of Mya and Brad. She is a poor girl who wants to make it an her own merits. Putting herself through law school and working two jobs to do it. Brad is a rich boy, a lawyer with a heart, working to advocate for children from broken marriages. He is also Mya's best friend's big brother and she has had a crush on him since high school. They get together after she accidently sends a racy picture of herself to him instead of her best friend. He is a playboy, she wants commitment and she holds him off as they get to know each other better. That leads to happily ever after.

My favourite quote: beyond the yummy sensual scenes.
"Before she could say anything more, he stepped close and caught her mouth with his." This is their first, unexpected kiss.

This book has 224 pages.

The Next Best Thing by Kristin Higgins

This is the story of Lucy Lang and Ethan Mirabelli. Lucy is a widow, a young widow, who married Jimmy. Jimmy is Ethan's older brother. He dies in a car accident. Lucy is trying to find love again - or more accurately, find a man to marry and have children with. She fears, like many of her female relatives, she has the curse of her husband dying early. For this reason, she does not want to get involved with Ethan because she really does love him. She learns some secrets about her husband - one is that he knew that Ethan was in love with her when he got involved with her. They do not diminish her love for him, but they lead her to have faith in her love for Ethan.

Favourite Quote:
"I love you, Lucy," Ethan says quietly. "I always have."

This book has 394 pages.

****
Trapped! by Lori Foster (This is a novel within another book All Riled Up - there is one other story which I will read as part of my October challenge).

Trapped! is only 104 pages.

It is the story of Rosie Carrington and Ethan Winters. Rosie and Ethan are long time friends. Rosie has loved Ethan forever. Ethan has been heartbroken by his ex-fiancΓ©e who jilted him at the alter to run off with his best friend, who is also Rosie's older brother. Rosie sets about getting Ethan to see her as a woman and when he does he realizes he has loved her for a long time as well, just not admitted it. Being trapped in a building with fireworks puts everything into perspective and he decides he will marry Rosie with a big wedding.

My favourite quote:
"Riley almost fell off the bench. "What are you talking about?" His voice rose to a shout when Riley almost never shouted. "I sure as hell haven't kissed you!" - here Ethan is trying to convince Rosie he is a wonderful kisser. He tells her to ask Riley.

Books read:

The 5:2 Diet -
Breaks down the idea of intermittent fasting by encouraging the dieter to eat restricted calories (500 for a woman, 600 for a man) on two days out of every week and to eat normally on the remaining five (hence 5:2). Alternatives are 4:3, 6:1 or alternative day fasting.
The book discusses the idea of intermittent fasting for health benefits (such as preventing spikes in insulin production), financial benefits (eating less = lower grocery bill) and as a pivotal role in many religions/faith systems. It not only provides several testimonies and background information on the formation on the diet, but a number of recipes, meal plans and ready-meals/takeaway options.
Calories are counted on 'fast' days (typical any two days of the week) and not on the 'feast' days. Anecdotal evidence suggests that after a few weeks using 5:2, diets naturally consume less on feast days (whilst still maintaining normal eating habits) that pre-dieting. It is vouchsafed as a lifestyle, not a short-term diet, with the bonus that if you want to eat out, celebrate, have a Christmas bash, etc, you simply switch your fast days to allow for this.
My favourite line: [this book treats you like an adult]...Pick and choose what makes sense to you.

***

Bones Are Forever -
In typical Reichs style, she opens the book with a crime scene. Brennan is searching an abandoned flat for the body of a newborn, only to find three tiny corpses. Where they stillborn, unviable foetuses or murdered neonates?
The mother, Annalise Rueben, a vanished prostitute, is presumed the killer; but all associates mark her down as slow, even mentally challenged, so how is she evading capture?
Brennan and (currently non-boyfriend Detective Ryan) leaving Quebec to follow Annalise into Alberta and thence the Far North. And incidentally running into another of Brennan's non-boyfriends. Cue lots and lots of surly hormones as Ryan and Srg Hasty go head-to-head in the alpha male stakes.
What starts out as a simple, if horrific, infanticide investigation quickly escalates into suspected drug gang warfare with a whole pile of bodies mounting up and the glint of diamonds in Canadian ice.
Am not giving any more away since it's a crime novel, but suffice to say further revelations into Ryan's personal life make me forgive him for being a jerk towards Temp Brennan. I'm still rooting for them to get back together, but Reichs is holding out on me.
My favourite line(s): Hasty: you know I'd give my left nut for an invite to Charlotte. Brennan: Sergeant Hasty, I assure you, your nut is safe.

Wild Cards II: Aces High
What a disappointment! Read Wild Cards I last month and thought it was the best read in a while. Aces High, not so much.
The Wild Cards series are a shared world (or so called mosaic book) edited by the awesome George RR Martin. Aces High sees the Wild Card virus through the eyes of alleged Joker, Jube aka Walrus. Turns out Jube is actually an alien quietly observing the fallout of the virus, and lives in Jokertown as it allows him to blend in - everyone assumes he's another unfortunate victim of the virus.
Not content with throwing the virus at us poor earthlings, the writers have now decided to invade the planet with a giant blob of semi-sentient yeast called the Mother Swarm and her/its rather heinous offspring. The book follows several jokers and aces as they combat the swarm, individually and together, and a rather dubious branch of the Masons who believe the Swarm is an ancient deity called TIAMET.
Frankly if Wild Cards III; Jokers Wild isn't a big improvement, I'm calling it quits.
Favourite line: You're a t-rex, three foot tall?

****

Shards of Honour: Lois McMaster Bujold
The very beginning of the Vorkosigan Saga, how Miles' parents, Aral Vorkosigan and Cordelia Naismith, first meet. Captain Naismith of the Betan Survey team suffers an ambush on her newest planetary exploration. When it turns out the attackers are Barrayans lead by the notorious Butcher of Komarr, Lord Admiral (currently demoted) Aral Vorkosigan himself, Naismith has to risk her life in order to save one of her men, seriously injured in the fight.
Taken prisoner by Vorkosigan, Naismith finds herself relying on this pensive soldier to keep her & her brain-damaged ensign alive. Unfortunately, Vorkosigan is the victim of political mutiny and ends up relying on Naismith as much as she does him.
Fast forward to a victorious return to command for Vorkosigan and a devious, but heart-wrenching escape for Naismith, and Cordelia has to deal with her home planet of Beta Colony warring with Barraya. Constricted into battle, Naismith once again ends up Vorkosigan's prisoner (only Bujold could make this realistic!) and has to participate in more Barrayan politics, that results in Beta Colony psychoanalysing her as a suspected spy once she makes it home. Devastated, she flees Beta and arrives at Barraya in time to stop Vorkosigan drinking himself into a wonderful stupour.
Favourite line: Too many.... third (fourth?) time I've read this and Bujold still makes me smirk. But lets go with one of Cordelia's (many) refusals to be Lady Vorkosigan: I'm not refusing you, never you, but I can't take Barraya. Barraya eats its children.
