         Cut to:
INT. NIGHT. HOTEL BAR

KAREN CAMPBELL enters the bar, there are a few OTHER PATRONS there. Easing onto a bar stool she waits for the BARMAN to turn to her.

A glass of the local rum please ?
BARMAN
(In Spanish)
That’ll be Havana Club!

Karen Campbell nods her agreement and the drink duly arrives.

ABIGAIL
Come down the La Lune with me tomorrow. There’s music, dancing and of course

She holds up her glass and wiggles it.

KAREN CAMPBELL
Yes I’ll do that!

KAREN CAMPBELL and ABIGAIL are sitting at a table in a partly covered courtyard. There is a band playing with people dancing to the music.

ABIGAIL
He’s coming over here!

Karen chances a glance and sees JOSE SANCHEZ, a black Cuban of about twenty-nine making for their table.

JOSE SANCHEZ
                   (In Spanish)
Good afternoon ladies are you enjoying the show ?

He looks from Abigail to Karen Campbell and his eyes light up with innuendo and invitation.

KAREN CAMPBELL
                   (In Spanish)
Yes very much so, won’t you join us?

JOSE SANCHEZ
                   (In Spanish)
I would love to, but first I must make the collection and play some more music. Will you wait for me to finish?

Jose, Karen Campbell and Abigail are sitting at the same table talking and laughing. They are getting on like a house on fire.

         Cut to:

KAREN CAMPBELL AND ABIGAIL wave goodbye to each other as JOSE SANCHEZ and Karen Campbell climb into a taxi and drive away.
         Cut to:

INT. DAY JOSE SANCHEZ’S HOME.

Jose Sanchez’s home is a two roomed shack. Bedroom/living room and kitchen combined and a bathroom of dubious character. The door swings open and KAREN CAMPBELL and JOSE SANCHEZ enter. Once the door closes the passion explodes. They rush almost desperately into a clinging embrace and a deep kiss.

Without breaking contact Jose Sanchez guides them to the bed and they sit on the edge, still kissing. Hands are exploring each others contours.

Breaking the kiss momentarily, Karen removes her T-shirt and exposes her breasts. Jose Sanchez smiles and reaches out to gently stroke them. As he lowers his head to kiss the nipple of her left breast, Karen Campbell’s eyes close in ecstasy and she sighs out her bated breath.

         Cut to:

They are in bed now and we focus on Karen Campbell’s face as she abandons herself to the moment.

         Dissolve to:

EXT. DAY. WATERHOLE BENEATH A WATERFALL.

There is a band playing and JOSE SANCHEZ and KAREN CAMPBELL are among the dancers.

         Cut to:

EXT. DUSK. CUBAN BEACH.

KAREN CAMPBELL is leant against a shadowy Palm Tree, silhouetted by a spectacular Caribbean sunset. Her hand reaches out and draws JOSE SANCHEZ into a loving kiss.
The kiss lingers until…

OFFICE GIRL 1#.(O.C.)
Miss Campbell?

         Cut To:

The music stops as abruptly as the scene changes.

INT. DAY. KAREN CAMPBELL’S OFFICE.

KAREN CAMPBELL is momentarily confused. Her casual attire whilst on holiday, in complete contrast to the woman we see now, in her office finery. Her hair tied back. Wearing glasses.

OFFICE GIRL 1#
Miss Campbell, I have the sales figures prepared.

OFFICE GIRL 1# is peering round the door to the office. There is a busy pool of office workers beyond.

KAREN CAMPBELL
Come in Sonia!

Office girl 1# enters, leaving the door open as she crosses to the desk. A folder with the sales figures in hand.

She glides round to Karen Campbell’s side of the desk and lays the folder in front of Karen Campbell.

OFFICE GIRL 1#
There was a drop in last month’s figures, but we’ve checked with previous years and the likeliest explanation is a seasonal variation.

There is a knock at the open door. Both woman look up and there stands DAVID JAMES the office Romeo, a confident likely lad.

DAVID JAMES
We’re going to the Griffith afterwards if you fancy it Karen?

KAREN CAMPBELL
I’ve told you before, its Miss Campbell during office hours Mr James!

There is humour in her voice and the glowing smile shows that she is being playful.

David James takes on the mannerism of a court subject from the middle ages.

DAVID JAMES
Begging m’lady’s pardon, but would you care to join us for the partaking of beverages tonight Miss Campbell?

KAREN CAMPBELL
Seeing as you have addressed me in the manner befitting my station, I will join you and your fellow reprobates tonight master James.

DAVID JAMES
Until tonight then, apple of my eye!

With that David James closes the door. Whilst Karen Campbell and Office girl 1# smirk at each other, before returning to the paper work.

         Cut to:

INT. NIGHT. THE GRIFFITH WINE BAR.

KAREN CAMPBELL, DAVID JAMES and several of the office men and women are there. Each holds a drink, either glasses or the more trendy bottle of alco-pop or American beer.

Several different threads of conversation are taking place at the same time. THE BOSS enters the arena set between Karen Campbell, David James and two other office workers.

THE BOSS
I haven’t had chance to welcome you back Karen, how did your gap year go?

KAREN CAMPBELL
Very well sir, I visited Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Argentina and Cuba.

THE BOSS
Splendid, you must show me your photographs sometime.

DAVID JAMES
Would you care for a drink sir?

THE BOSS
That’s decent of you David, I’ll have a whiskey and soda – no ice!

Some time has transpired and The Boss has left, David James looks like he has had a few. Excitedly into the group rushes SARAH WISE, Karen Campbell’s best friend.

SARAH WISE
Karen. Karen When did you get back?

There are hugs and kisses between the two women.

KAREN CAMPBELL
Last Saturday.

SARAH WISE
Should have phoned me we could have gone dancing. I bet your really good at it now you’ve actually been there!

KAREN CAMPBELL
I was really tired, I slept most of Saturday and stayed in bed Sunday.

DAVID JAMES
You could have phoned me for that!

KAREN CAMPBELL
Don’t you ever give up trying?

DAVID JAMES
My time will come!

KAREN CAMPBELL
In your dreams.

Sarah Wise takes Karen Campbell by the elbow and steers her away from David James and the others.
SARAH WISE
Come on, lets find a seat and you can tell me all about it.

Sarah Wise and Karen Campbell leave David James in the company of his fellow workers.

David James Murmurs to himself.

DAVID JAMES
One day!

He takes a swig from the bottle he is holding.

         Cut to:

On the wall are framed pictures of Wesley Snipes and Eddie Murphy. KAREN CAMPBELL is in bed and sleeping soundly. We zoom in on her face and beyond into the world of dreams.

         Cut to:

EXT. DAY. KAREN CAMPBELL’S DREAM WORLD.

It is a gloriously sunny day, in a forested glade. KAREN CAMPBELL and JOSE SANCHEZ are there enjoying a picnic and Karen Campbell is holding a baby, their baby. Rocking it gently, she is tickling the nose of the child. Jose Sanchez moves beside Karen Campbell and looks lovingly at the child as he leans into Karen Campbell. Both of them are full of smiles. Karen turns her head and kisses Jose Sanchez.

SFX: The dream is invaded by the bleeping of an irate alarm clock.

         Dissolve to:

INT DAY KAREN CAMPBELL’S BEDROOM.

A close up of the offending alarm clock and KAREN CAMPBELL’s hand blindly groping for the off switch.

Now we see Karen Campbell in bed in the process of waking up. Sighing she throws back the covers and places her feet on the floor.

          “Jose Sanchez’s village phone”
                00421 675

Though she has used it before whilst in Cuba, it’s a big temptation to use it now.

She Places the photo album on the coffee table and takes up her drink. Sipping gently she studies, the page she has left open.

Finally she makes her mind up and placing her drink back down reaches out for the telephone. Dialling the directory enquiries

KAREN CAMPBELL

He pulls a chair out from under the table, that is near the kitchen side of the shack. As Karen Campbell sits down, Jose Sanchez busies himself preparing a pot of coffee on the stove.

Karen Campbell casts her eyes around the interior of the shack. From the windowless window frames with their open shutters, to the Guitar hanging from the wall. The Poster of Che Guava. The bed and wardrobe, the bathroom of little appeal and the kitchen area. She looks at Jose Sanchez and lightly smiles. Then remembers..

I’ve a couple of presents for you!

She gets up and crosses to her suitcase, setting it on the bed she opens it and takes out a couple of gift wrapped parcels. Walking up to Jose Sanchez who has turned around and is waiting expectantly, she hands them to Jose Sanchez.

Sarah Wise looks up from her coffee.

SARAH WISE
Yet its sorted and he’ll be here in less than three weeks aren’t you pleased?

KAREN CAMPBELL
Yes, but its been stressful wondering if everything is alright and on course.

SARAH WISE
Just think about being back with him and it’ll all seem worth it!

Karen Campbell toys with her coffee mug, but doesn’t take a sip.

KAREN CAMPBELL
Your right as always, that’s what I like about you!

SARAH WISE
What would you do without me ?

KAREN CAMPBELL
Go to pieces probably!

SARAH WISE
So what are your plans this week?

         Cut to:

INT NIGHT RESTURANT.

KAREN CAMPBELL (V.O)
I’ve got the team building dinner on Tuesday!

KAREN CAMPBELL, THE BOSS, DAVID JAMES, OFFICE WORKER # 1 and OFFICE WORKER #2. Are sitting at the table each with a meal partly eaten in front of them. Accompanied by a glass of red wine.

DAVID JAMES
I look forward to these get togethers sir.

THE BOSS
So do I my boy, a chance to put the office to one side and network as ordinary people. Karen how did your latest holiday go ?

Karen Campbell is eating a mouthful of food, quickly she swallows and takes a sip of wine to wash it down.

KAREN CAMPBELL
Very well, I saw my boyfriend in Cuba and he’s coming over to England soon.

David James looks at Karen suddenly in response to this revelation.

THE BOSS
Splendid it’ll do him good to see a real democracy in action!

Karen Campbell nods whilst thinking something less than complimentary.

Some time has passed and they are now eating desert David James is sneaking looks at Karen Campbell, from the corner of his eye. Its easy to see that he is formulating something.
More time has passed and they are on the coffees.

DAVID JAMES
Karen, do you want to share a cab with me? We’re both heading in the same direction.

KAREN CAMPBELL
Yes why not, if you don’t mind swinging past my place.

         Cut too:

INT NIGHT BLACK CAB.

The cab is driving along a high street, with KAREN CAMPBELL and DAVID JAMES in the back. Karen Campbell is people watching whilst David James asks questions.

DAVID JAMES
So when is your boyfriend due?

DAVID JAMES
Have you known him long?

KAREN CAMPBELL
I’ve known him for four months, seen him for four weeks of that!

DAVID JAMES
I see!

KAREN CAMPBELL
What about you?

DAVID JAMES
I only have eyes for one woman!

KAREN CAMPBELL
That’s not what they say in the typing pool!

DAVID JAMES
Shouldn’t believe everything you hear.

KAREN CAMPBELL
Well you know the saying there’s no smoke without fire

The black cab turns into a side street and travels along a residential area. David James falls silent and gazes out of the opposite window to Karen Campbell.

KAREN CAMPBELL
If you pull in by the polo driver, that’ll do me!

DAVID JAMES
I suppose coming in for coffee is out of the question ?

KAREN CAMPBELL
I’m tired and besides I know you and your idea of coffee. I have a boyfriend and I want to stay faithful. So if you don’t mind I’ll take a rain check on that!

The Cab pulls into the curb and Karen Campbell steps out, closing the door behind her she turns to the front passenger side window and holds out a five pound note for the Cabbie. Without waiting for change she goes to her front door.

The Cab pulls away and David James watches Karen Campbell through the window.

DAVID JAMES
         (in a low voice)
Bitch!

CABBIE
Did you say something sir?

DAVID JAMES
Nothing just keep on driving!

         Cut to:

KAREN CAMPBELL pulls up in a parking space and switches off the engine, opening the door she steps out and locks the car door. Then walks out of shot.

         Cut to:

INT DAY. PASSENGER ARRIVALS GATE.

There are many people waiting for arrivals from Cuba. The First passengers walk into view and KAREN CAMPBELL strains to get a view of Jose Sanchez. Many people walk through before JOSE SANCHEZ is spotted by her.

KAREN CAMPBELL
Jose, Jose!

JOSE SANCHEZ looks toward Karen Campbell who is waving to attract attention.

Jose Sanchez is carrying a tatty leather suitcase, that was obviously a well used donation from a tourist to someone Jose Sanchez knows.

Jose Sanchez breaks into a smile and quickens his pace as he weaves past the other arrivals.

In Front of Karen Campbell he places the suitcase down and wraps his arms around her for a loving embrace that also  develops into a welcoming kiss. Karen Campbell responds in kind.

         Dissolve to:

INT DAY. KAREN’S POLO CAR.

The car is travelling along the motorway, Salsa playing on the CD player. JOSE SANCHEZ is looking out of the window at the build up of urban landscape. KAREN CAMPBELL is concentrating on driving.

JOSE SANCHEZ
         (In Spanish)
So many houses!

KAREN CAMPBELL
         (In Spanish)
Yes its very different from Cuba!

JOSE SANCHEZ
         (In Spanish)
I think there are more people here than in the whole of Cuba!

KAREN CAMPBELL
         (In Spanish)
Wait till you see the city itself!

JOSE SANCHEZ
         (In Spanish)
I thought this was the city.

KAREN CAMPBELL
         (in Spanish)
This is just the Suburbs!

JOSE SANCHEZ
         (In Spanish)
This is luxury it makes me feel ashamed of my home!

KAREN CAMPBELL
         (in Spanish)
There’s no need for shame, some of my best memories of Cuba are of your home.

Jose Sanchez places his suitcase down and moves to put his arm around Karen Campbell. She leans into his embrace and cranes her head to kiss him.

         Dissolve to:

Karen Campbell and Jose Sanchez are sitting on the sofa cosily huddled together. The Television is on and Buena Vista Social Club, is being viewed.

JOSE SANCHEZ
         (In Spanish)
I have seen a television in my friend’s house. Yet not like this. In Cuba it is mainly Fidel and Party messages. This is nice to watch something that isn’t about what you should do!

KAREN CAMPBELL
         (In Spanish)
Now you can watch what ever you want, I have many videos, but they are in English, you may find it difficult to understand.

(Pause)

I thought we could relax tonight, I will cook some dinner in a minute – something special in honour of your visit – tomorrow night we go dancing.

JOSE SANCHEZ
         (In Spanish)
Sounds good! I like England it is a big place. Yet I like it most of all because I am with you again!

KAREN CAMPBELL
Arr!

She strokes his face and he turns and they kiss again.

         (PAUSE)

Hello Sis what can I do for you?

         (PAUSE)
He’s done what?

She Sits down on the sofa.

Yes, yes of course I’ll be straight over, is it okay to bring my boyfriend ? He's here at the moment!

Yes Jose, the one I told you about!

JOSE SANCHEZ enters the room, sipping from a coffee mug and watches Karen Campbell on the phone.

KAREN CAMPBELL
A-S-A-P! Yes Bye!

She hangs up the receiver.

JOSE SANCHEZ
         (In Spanish)
What was that about?

KAREN CAMPBELL looks up at him
KAREN CAMPBELL
         (in Spanish)
That was my sister, her husband has cut himself doing some repairs to the house and she wants us to look after her children while she takes him to the hospital, do you mind ?
It means we will have to go to the city centre another day!

JOSE SANCHEZ
         (in Spanish)
Of course I don’t mind, family comes first!

         Cut too:

EXT DAY. KAREN’S SISTER’S HOUSE.

Even as KAREN CAMPBELL and JOSE SANCHEZ approach the front door, skirting round the BMW in the drive, as they do so. The front door opens and KAREN’S SISTER is in a bit of a panic.

KAREN’S SISTER
Karen, thank god, come on Tony lets get there before you bleed to death.

Karen’s Sister looks to Jose Sanchez.

KAREN’S SISTER
Hello you must be Jose?

Jose Sanchez just looks quizzical, as TONY sheepishly appears behind Karen’s sister, his right hand wrapped in a bloodied towel.

KAREN CAMPBELL
He only speaks Spanish!
         (In Spanish)
She said hello!

JOSE SANCHEZ
Say Hello for me!

Jose Sanchez holds his hand out to Karen’s Sister and they shake.

KAREN CAMPBELL
He says hello back!
Karen’s sister moves towards the BMW.

TONY
I won’t shake hands

He holds up his towelled hand as the reason.

KAREN CAMPBELL
Is it bad Tony?

KAREN’S SISTER
It will need stitches!

Karen’s Sister gets into the BMW and Starts it up.

TONY
I don’t think I’ll die from it, but it is bleeding quite well!

Tony opens the passenger side door and flops into the passenger seat. As he struggle with the door. Karen Campbell steps up to his aid.

KAREN CAMPBELL
I’ll get it!

She closes the door after Tony.

Karen’s sister waves goodbye and reverses the BMW out of the drive.

Karen Campbell returns the wave. Then turning to Jose Sanchez who looks a little bemused.

She Crouches down arms out for a hug, the two children move into her reach, they are in need of reassurance.
Cuddling the two Children, Karen Campbell speaks softly to them.

KAREN CAMPBELL
Don’t worry you two, Daddy will be alright he’s big and strong.

Looking into each face in turn. She checks they’re calming down.

Bobby giggles

BOBBY

KAREN CAMPBELL
That’s because he’s from Cuba, they don’t speak English in Cuba!

KERRY
How does he talk then?

KAREN CAMPBELL
He talks in Spanish!

KERRY
Oh its another language, like the French I am learning, does he speak French?

KAREN CAMPBELL
No, just Spanish!

Karen Campbell is all smiles, she obviously enjoys being around Children. Satisfied they are more content, she stands up.

KAREN CAMPBELL
         (in Spanish)
Jose, please meet Bobby and Kerry.

She points to each in turn, in case the names are confusing him.

Bobby walks up to Jose Sanchez and takes him by the hand.

BOBBY
Come and sit down Jose!

Jose Sanchez looks from the child to Karen Campbell, before he gets a response from her, he is moving towards the sofa in response to Bobby’s gentle pulling.

BOBBY
Sit there!

To help Jose Sanchez understand he points at the armchair and makes a sitting down mime.

JOSE SANCHEZ
(In Spanish)
Yes booby!

BOBBY
         (laughing)
Its Bobby!

JOSE SANCHEZ
Bob-be

Karen Campbell moves to the television and switches on the set. Then selecting the remote, puts the “Cartoon Network” on for the children. Also considering it a good choice for Jose  as its easy to follow what is going on with cartoons.

KAREN CAMPBELL
(In Spanish)
Jose, can you watch the children, while I clean the blood up that is on the carpet?

Jose Sanchez’s nods, as Bobby Climbs on his lap and settles down to watch the television. Kerry sits on the Sofa.

KAREN CAMPBELL stops in the doorway and dreamily regards JOSE SANCHEZ, BOBBY & KERRY. The children are both sitting with Jose Sanchez and it looks to Karen Campbell like a blissful picture.

After regarding the scene for more than a few seconds she enters the room.

         JOSE SANCHEZ
         (in Spanish)
You should see what this mouse is doing to the cat!

JOSE SANCHEZ
         (in Spanish)
How do I look?

Jose Sanchez is wearing a suit that looks like a cheap off the peg item. Some what archaic in design. Karen Campbell realises getting dressed up for the occasion isn’t an option.

KAREN CAMPBELL
         (In Spanish)
I think we better go casual, wear the jeans with your shirt, I’ll put on a skirt and top instead.

JOSE SANCHEZ
         (In Spanish)
Why don’t you like my suit?

KAREN CAMPBELL
         (in Spanish)
its not really the thing to wear in the club we are going to.

She looks at Jose Sanchez and sees he is feeling insulted,

KAREN CAMPBELL
         (in Spanish)
I want you to look good!

That was the wrong thing to say. Jose Sanchez complies with her idea but mutters to himself in Spanish, sulking as he takes off the clothes.
