Love means so much more in nostalgic repast.

A golden oldie echoing the past --
heart-crushing lyrics spun from a 45
on the turntable in the corner
of her bedroom when I mimicked
words by Billy Joel, while
vowing my commitments to Mary
who had just turned 15.

What could it mean to be in love
at that age? Muttered words
in the dark aiming, failing,
searching again for an opening.
The essence of strawberry shampoo
lingered about her soft neck
full of promises undelivered
until now when I remember
the bluest eyes and tender lips
that trembled not once
daring me even now in shadows.

Pine and sigh, where is she now?
Not the same as it was back then.
I'd walk miles through torrents,
secreted by moonlight on those nights
the house was empty, her parents away.
Slip on another song. Those golden oldies
never die -- just spin on, spin on.
