Reflecting on my past briefly as the end of the year draws near.
The end of another year is close and we have a brief respite between Christmas and the New Year. I like to use this time to reflect not only on the past year but my entire life as well. Somewhere back there in time are regrets, sorrows, and rough times that lie just beneath the surface of my memories, buried, but not so deep as to forget the things that caused them. I do not like to dwell in unhappiness but to enjoy the better times, somewhat brief and gone, or those lasting ones that are here to stay.
I think of the family and friends that have been with me all my life while we were half way around the world from one another. I often say that we are the most lucky ones in the history of mankind. Many of us can remember a different world of limited luxuries and modern conveniences. Hot sultry nights with no air conditioners, hard times, and hand me down clothes. Then came an avalanche of new inventions, styles of music, fancy automobiles, space travel and electronic gadgets.
We are creatures of comfort while in some lie beasts of brutality waiting to cause death and destruction on others when the opportunity arises. No matter how civilized the person, there lies within a latent savagery of greed and lust. Some of us have the willpower to control these instincts while others hide it or just do not care. Knowing there is no magic formula to dispel this in others we have to be vigilant and wise in our decisions, travels, ventures and daily routines. It saddens me to know in my mind all the tragic harm that will be done to others in the coming year but at the same time I garner hope that there will be many more good acts than bad.
