Essays for aspiring writers. |
I Am A Writer You are reading my biography, the biography of one lost soul. I guess you could say I was born to be a writer. I've always wanted to be everyone and I wanted to be him NOW. So basically I have two choices as I see it, well, three actually: 1.) I could live a hundred lifetimes and be a different person each time I come back. Problem. How would I know who I was before or if I was even anything before. 2.) I could become an actor. Yes. That's what I could do. An actor can become whatever character he wants. Problem. An actor must have a memory a mile long and two miles wide. How else can he recite the many lines he must repeat in order to be a successful actor. My memory? One inch...if it's stretched. So much for 2. 3.) I could be a writer. Hah...thank God for choices. I'm already a writer - you're reading me now. Do I have to make money? Who cares!!! I already have a job! Now I can become any character I want to be! So there you have it. I am not a lost soul! I'm a Writer!! Dream it! Write it! Is writing hard? Not unless you want it to be. Do you dream? Do your dreams have a middle and end? What makes them so real? Do you wake up scared from a nightmare? Do you long to return to a love dream? Of course you do! Why? Because you are in them. You are neck deep in the fears and emotions of your dreams. They are your realities every night. There is no "What will I dream tonight?" You will sweat. You will swoon. You will love. You will get hurt. You will do everything but wonder how you are going to overcome your writer's block. Dreams don't have writer's blocks any more than life has "do overs." The answer is because you are in them. Put yourself into your writings. Can you write? If you can dream it, you can do it! Passing the Beginning Stage of Writing The easiest way to become a proficient writer is to get away from yourself. You were there when you decided to become a writer. You were there with all the stupid mistakes at the beginning. You were there at every stage of that journey of learning. Now, when you think about it, that's a lot of baggage to carry along when all you should really be thinking of is how to make your current writings the best they can be. I have a suggestion... Dump your baggage at the door! Don't think of where you've been! Don't think of where you want to be! Don't think of YOU at all! Unless your writings are autobiographical, get yourself out of there! Create a new Reality. Then fill that Reality with people, places, and things. Then flesh out that Reality, let it breathe! Don't make it yours. Let it become itself. See what happens. Remember, writing is like a marriage. You wouldn't marry yourself, you already have you. You married someone to fill in the gaps of your life that you cannot touch. Let your writing develop the same way. Stay out of it, let it develop on its own. Insert the characters that belong in that reality. Your writing will become natural if you can stay out of the way. Good Luck! Good Writings! I Am A Writer You are reading my biography, the biography of one lost soul. I guess you could say I was born to be a writer.
