a short poem about war

A tall wall of indifference.
An endless bloody sea of need.
We can’t hold it all inside us.
The awesome wonder of we.

We mind the hands of little ones.
We vanquish all their shapeless fears.
We bandage all their weeping wounds.
We sew them closed with tears.

Gone, the stateless reinforcements.
Dead, every single one.
They bet their lives on a sure thing.
But alas, what prize have they won?

The war is never over.
Another battle begins.
We start just where we finished.
We lose, and we never win.
