Why do I write?

We were discussing this topic last week in my Creative Writing Collective, so I suggested that we take it as our theme for our assignment for the next group session in two weeks’ time, when we will read out and discuss what everyone has written.  I set a maximum of 300 words for the assignment.

As leader of the group, I always feel honour bound to complete the assignments.  So this is my answer to this thorny question.

Why do I write?

It gives me an outlet for my thoughts and emotions. There is a sense of achievement when I look at the page and see a piece of finished writing, especially when it is a poem. I would write even without an audience. Sharing my work with others is the icing on the cake. I know that we all dream of being the next J K Rowling, but I can honestly say that publishing, although a dream, is not the be all and end all of my existence. I have just GOT to write.

Why do I write?

It gives me an outlet
for thoughts and emotions,
a sense of achievement
when I look at the page.

The lines or the rhymes
on the paper before me,
my own special children
who never will age.

The energy crackles.
It sizzles right thorough me
especially when
it's a poem I write.

The rhyme and the metre
infuse all my senses.
My mind becomes centred.
My focus is tight.

I write with my heart with
no thought of audience
to sharing it with others
is icing the cake.

Escape? Not an option.
I've just got to do it
when I feel the insistence
of words that I make.
