This may raise a few questions, then - maybe not.
How did my teachers get it wrong?
A poem once was like a song,
Rhythm, flow, and lovely rhyme,
I enjoyed it all; in another time.
Have academics ‘dumbed it down’?
I read much today, with a worried frown.
Education has been changed for good,
Gone are the lessons I once understood.
Most of our schools have no difficult tests
to show the students what subject is best
for each to apply to life’s many decisions,
he’s left to flounder by many omissions.
But, Poetry is communication,
for everyone, from every nation,
to read, consider and enjoy
as if written for each girl and boy.
Free Verse, I think, has a place,
‘Contemporary Expression’ Is a disgrace
when a degree is needed to figure out
what the hell the writing’s about.
I write in rhyme, some free verse too,
and writing prose, I like to do.
Some stories don’t suit a formal style,
so I ramble in prose along different mile.
Abstract metaphor, heaven forbid,
the past’s ’Old masters’ never did
confuse the reader with such stuff,
just making a living was trouble enough.
But,has the time come, like the walrus said,
to put good clear writing away in its bed?
Will we hear no more, a musical voice
read aloud with pleasure, a poem of choice.
