I am drained of energy, yet I am content. This poem is in the WDC Anthology for 2014

I’m drained, exhausted and tired,
I feel old, very old.
Have I given myself away
and left nothing of me,
for me?

I don’t think so,
for the giving away of one’s self
perversely creates more
of oneself
To give away.

Then why am I so drained?
Perhaps I am looking at this
In the wrong way;

I do that frequently.
The frailty of humanity
leaps from the starting block
when least wanted;
or expected.

I look forward to
when the sun shines,
the birds sing in the trees
and my batteries are fully charged
after a good night:

I expect I am being asked
to pay
for the interesting and
adventurous life
I was fortunate to have,
and the careless abandon
In which I lived it.

If that is so,
then so be it,
for I am content.
