How has popular media acted to create negative role models for contemporary audiences? Violence could be a good example of negative media. In the article, “Violent Media is Good for Kids”, Gerard Jones is explaining to the reader that violent media is healthy for youth because it helps them to defend themselves from other people who attack them. But in the bottom of page 373, Jones stated, “In the wake of the recent burst of school shootings, I heard pop psychologists insisting that violent stories are harmful to kids, and heard teachers begging parents to keep their kids away from ‘junk culture’.” This quote means that violent media could cause school shootings, which had psychologists turn against violence and teachers pleading to the children’s parents to keep them from reading ‘junk culture’, also known as the violent media.
Fiction can also be an excellent example. In another article, “The Art of Immersion: Fear of Fiction”, the author Frank Rose talks about fiction and how people consider it as “real”. On page 369, Rose stated, “Even after books gained acceptance, novels could still seem dangerously immersive in other formats.” In other words, fiction could become highly addicting and people would no longer pay attention to the real world around them.
Video games also can have a negative impact on society. In “Can Video Games Teach Us How to Succeed in the Real World?”, author Lane Wallace explains that video games are very popular. Angry Birds, a popular application for iPhones, iPads, etc. has reached over 50,000,000 downloads. According to Wallace, “The time people spend playing all of those games is increasing (390).” What the writer is saying is that the world is spending a lot of time playing video games, which causes them to lack attention in the important things in the real world such as school and household chores.
So, how has popular media acted to create negative role models for contemporary audiences? Media has affected society negatively because it uses violence that could cause school-shootings, fiction that could keep us from paying attention to the real world, and video games that could keep us from getting other things done.
