This was inspired by my grandfather's unfinished duck carving
The Tale of the Unfinished Carving

Dust fell like snow upon me
Light shone through the window
Casting a glow in the room
I held the object up to the light
Turning it over slowly I fingered it
Rubbing the half carved wood softly
This was one of my grandfather's birds
He never finished this one though
I let my mind wander into a daydream
One where I'd walk into his studio
And he'd be sitting there with his birds
Then he would smile at me
And he would beckon me closer
That's when I'd walk over to look
Upon his desk would be this bird
One that would be half made
I'd pick it up and grandfather would smile
He would tell me all about his birds
How each one was special to him
Each one had an original poem that he wrote
But that is just a daydream
And grandfather isn't here
To finish the bird or the poem
Instead I pick up a pen and write
This is the tale of the unfinished carving
