Forever Yours Chapter Eleven
Chapter Eleven

“….Good morning you beautiful beach people!” the DJ of the local radio station WVBNC 103.5 shouted through the speaker and Savannah sighed and reached over to hit Jacob to wake him.

“Whaaaaaaaaat?” he grumbled and turned away from her. “What time is it?”

“Nine thirty-four.” Savannah answered as she got out of bed but he didn’t budge. “You don’t have to go with me.” She reminded him from the adjoining bathroom where she had started to brush her teeth.

“No, no, no….I’m driving you.” He sighed and flung back the covers.

She appeared in the doorway of the bathroom, toothbrush sticking out of her mouth, her eyes giving him an impatient onceover.

“I’m-not-so-feeble-that-I-can’t…” she held up her hand as she turned to spit into the sink. “I can still drive, you know.” She finished before going back to what she was doing.

“I don’t know how…”

She stopped and stared at him through the mirror.

“You’re going there? Really?” Savannah rolled her eyes and ignored him while she finished.

“Jason is going to love this. Even he didn’t act so…” she moved her hands around wildly as her brain searched for the right word.

“Overprotective, domineering, controlling?”

She smirked and folded her arms over her chest.

“Those are all great descriptive words but I was thinking more like crazy or insane.”

“I’m not that bad.” He frowned as he stood alongside her and reached for his toothbrush.

“No, but you’re driving me there pretty fast.” She looked over at him, the faintest hint of a smile on her face. “Just relax, okay?” she patted his shoulder. “And hurry up. I don’t want to be late.”

The weather outside was a gorgeous eighty-one degrees with a slight breeze, stirring up the smell of salt from the ocean’s waves. “I love where we live.” Savannah smiled as she took a minute to appreciate the stunning beach view in front of her as Jacob opened the passenger’s side door for her. “Thank you baby.” She smiled as she leaned towards him, pressing her lips to his softly.

“If you’re good maybe we’ll go for ice cream later.” He mumbled with a smiled and she pushed at him gently.

“Don’t tease me.”

He shook his head.

“I’m not. You can have ice cream if you want it.” he said as he walked around the car after helping her in.

“Yeah but knowing you, you’ll forget about it.”

Jacob responded with a roll of his eyes as he started the engine then backed down the driveway.

Once they were in an exam room, she was promptly given a plastic cup for her urine sample which she was able to fill easily.

“How are you feeling today?” Elena, one of the nurses, a small petite redhead with bright blue eyes and freckles dotting over her nose, asked as she walked in to get Savannah’s vitals. “Have you ben weighed yet?” she asked as she wrapped the blood pressure cuff around her arm then squeezed the bulb to make it tighten.

Savannah shook her head as Elena glanced over. “Oh hey Jacob. I didn’t see you sitting there.”

“No one does anymore since Doctor British showed up.” he scowled and the girl laughed.

“I just love Jason. He’s so sweet.”

“Oh yeah. Sweet as honey.” Jacob rolled his eyes as Elena wrote down the blood pressure reading.

“Well, you did invite him to join the practice.” Savannah commented with a laugh and he gave her a look.

“What?” that only made her laugh harder. “You did!”

“Thank you for stating the obvious.”

She grinned at him widely.

“You’re welcome.”

After samples of blood were taken then sent off to the lab, Elena finished up the physical part of the exam before excusing herself after telling them that Kelly, the ultrasound tech would be in with them shortly.

Savannah sighed and rubbed her eyes as the door closed with a loud click. “I am so exhausted.” she yawned and stretched her arms over her head. “And hungry. Can we go for a burger and fries and the ice cream? Don’t look at me like that.” she scolded as his eyes widened in disbelief. “Your children are hungry. You wouldn’t deny them nutrition, would you?”

“Well, no but are you sure you can eat all that?”

“Trust me when I say I can. My appetite has grown rapidly over the last few weeks. Some days I feel like I can’t eat enough.”

“Is this usually the part where the overly sensitive husband says something like, ‘be thankful you aren’t having more than one’? Wait…you are!”

“Haha.” Savannah rolled her eyes. “Tell me something I don’t know.”

“I wish I could but that will have to wait a few weeks.” A male voice laughed and Jason entered the room.

Savannah eyed him suspiciously.

“Since when do you do ultrasounds?”

He laughed and shook his head.

“I don’t. I just came in to tell you the ultrasound tech had to leave early.”

“How much longer is your shift?” Jacob asked as Savannah got to her feet.

“Just about to clock out now, if you guys don’t have dinner plans come on over.” his blue-green eyes sparkled as he showed off his set of gleaming white teeth.

Jason flashed her a grin as they walked into the waiting area and stopped by the sign in window to say bye to Mary-Anne before leaving.

After inviting her as well, the trio headed for the parking lot.

“Do you want me to pick up the food?” Jacob called as he and Savannah reached her car.

Jason nodded.

“Thanks buddy and I want a banana cream pie milkshake with mine.”

Jacob nodded with a wave as he and Savannah climbed into the car then drove away.

After getting their food from Hamburger Heaven, Jacob steered left for the five minute drive to Jason’s. When they pulled up, Mary-Anne, who had decided she too needed to go home to shower and change, was just exiting her car.

“Perfect timing, huh?” Savannah smiled as she got out.

Jacob gathered their food and drinks then followed the two girls as they started up the walkway. “So how’s it going with you two?” Savannah asked with a grin as Jacob knocked on the front door

He glanced over with a raised eyebrow.

“That’s what you want to start with? Reeeally Savannah?”

“Shut up.” His wife scolded as she pushed at his chest. “You know you were dying to know.”

“I already knew.” Jacob said with a smirk.

Savannah was about to come back with some witty retaliation but before she could, Jason opened the door.

“You guys made it. Come on in.”

“Did you really think we wouldn’t?” Jacob laughed and showed him the food.

Jason laughed as he welcomed them into his extravagant bachelor pad.

He leaned towards Mary-Anne and kissed her mouth as she blushed slightly.

“How are you sweetheart?” he mumbled, his lips close to her ear as she let out a tiny giggle.

“Oh lord…” Jacob rolled his eyes playfully as Jason took the stuff from him and carried it to the kitchen. “She’s going to turn to Jell-O in three, two, one…”

Mary-Anne flipped up her middle finger and Savannah had to stop herself from laughing.

Everyone gathered in the kitchen and Jason handed out everyone’s food and drinks.

“I meant for you to get ice cream too.” He said after he had chewed and swallowed a mouthful of his double beef patty with mustard, pickles and onions.

“That’s what we forgot!” Savannah frowned then looked at Jacob, who nodded.

“Yes, I’ll go get some.”

“You’re a good-“ Jason started to say.

“Shut up.”

Jason made a horrified face and in his best Southern accent boomed,

“Well, I never!”

Savannah just gave him a look as she turned to her husband and told him what flavor she wanted.

“I feel kinda like the third wheel here with you guys.” Savannah laughed as she, Mary-Anne and Jason ventured into his living room after Jacob left.

“Nonsense!” Jason scoffed with a roll of his eyes. “Why would you feel that way?” he asked as he helped her over to the couch even though she was perfectly capable of getting there herself.

“Because you two can’t be as free with your PDAs with me here.” She laughed as Jason made a face and he placed his hand on Mary-Anne’s thigh. “Or maybe not...”

Mary-Anne smiled as she leaned into him and closed her eyes, breathing him in.

“We just find a way around it.”

“Before you know it you two will be the one with the kid on the way.” Savannah joked and Mary-Anne smiled.

“I wouldn’t mind that.”

She looked over at Jason, who was grinning.

“Me either darling.”

Savannah’s eyes widened as she tried to piece together their cryptic message.

“Are you guys…?”

“Not yet.” Jason laughed and sat back in the hard wooden chair. “At least not to my knowledge. I figured I’d let Jacob test those waters before I jumped in.”

Savannah just laughed at that; she had to remember to relay that message.

That Saturday, Savannah and Jacob decided to spend the day together since they were both off. The morning greeted them with clear blue skies and white puffy clouds and Savannah smiled as she sat out on their porch sipping a hot cup of chocolate. She glanced over at Jacob, who was quietly looking through the sports section of the local paper.

“What did you want to do today?” she asked as she looked over at him with a smile. “I’m open to anything. Since the weather is so nice let’s take the boat out.”

A little while after getting into medical school, Jacob splurged and purchased a speed boat, which was currently the nicest thing he owned aside from his Lexus.

Jacob smiled his brownish-green eyes crinkling at the corners as he turned a page. “I’m up for that if you are.”

Savannah nodded as she took another sip from her mug as he did his coffee.

“I don’t know how you drink that stuff.” She made a face after swallowing.

“Especially the way you…” she stopped when she realized he was saying what she was. “Well, I don’t! That crap is nasty.”

“People have been drinking it for years honey.” Jacob laughed as she made another face.

“I don’t see how. It tastes like a dirty sweat soaked sock.”

Jacob laughed as he drained what was left then stood up to take his cup inside.

“Do you want to go anywhere for breakfast?” he suggested as he set his mug down into the sink then he turned to look at her.

Savannah shrugged as she sauntered up to him.

”You don’t want me to cook?” she pouted and he couldn’t help but laugh.

“Did I say that?” he shook his head with a laugh. “I don’t remember uttering those words.”

Savannah rolled her eyes as she walked over to the refrigerator and removed the eggs and milk from the top shelf.

“French toast, waffles or pancakes?” she smiled as she gathered together what she needed.

“How about all three if I make some orange juice?”

“Sounds good to me.” she smiled then set to work on preparing the food and he went about getting the juice ready

A little while later, they sat around the kitchen, surrounded by the food that was enough to feed a small army. After blessing the food, they each dug in quietly for different reasons, hers being the babies and well, his was that he just liked to eat.

“You know what I was thinking we should get?” Jacob said a few minutes later after taking a few bites of food.

When she only looked up, her mouth too full to answer, he went on. “A puppy. Like a golden retriever or something.”

She smiled and nodded, swallowing before she spoke.

“I think that’s a great idea.” She paused in mid-sip of her orange juice. “What about the…”

“We’ll have the dogs trained long before they even get here.” He assured her as he cut into his waffle, pancake and French toast trio, everything oozing with buttery golden maple syrup.

She watched him quietly, her chin in her hands as he ate his food silently. Each day that passed she realized she loved him more and more.

When they pulled at the Love and Cuddles animal shelter a little while later, Savannah smiled. Animals held a special spot in her heart and always had. Since growing up in Southport she had been given plenty of opportunities to work with all kinds of creatures from the sea to dry land. While she had enjoyed working with dolphins and other sea animals, she really found herself identifying with the throngs of abused and neglected dogs the most because of their natural personalities.

“I like the concept of animal shelters.” She smiled as they walked towards the building hand in hand. “It gives them a chance, you know? I hate the thought of them being put down just because they didn’t have a family.”

Jacob glanced over at her then shook his head.

“That was depressing…..sheesh!”

Savannah suppressed a giggle as she leaned up to kiss his cheek.

“Thanks for doing this.”

He shrugged.

“Dogs are my weakness. Especially strays.” He added as he reached for the door and pulled it open for her.

Savannah smiled, thanking him while she stepped inside.

They entered an entrance way that reminded Savannah of some kind of canine prison and she shuddered slightly as they glanced around.

“Are you as uneasy as I am?” he mumbled. “This place is…”

“Why hello there!” a heavyset woman in a brightly colored yellow and polka dotted outfit called from down the hall as she made her way towards them.

A pair or oversized glasses sat perched on the edge of her nose. “Can I help you folks with something?”

“You most certainly can.” Jacob smiled. “Do you have a golden retriever by any chance?”

The woman nodded then excused herself to go get a puppy.

A few minutes later she walked back out with a ball of yellow fur curled up in the woman’s arms and Savannah grinned.

“Oh how cute! Does it have a name?” she asked and the woman shook her head.

Savannah thought for a minute as she stared into the huge chocolate eyes of the tiny puppy. “How about…Sparkler or Sprinkler?”

Jacob gave her a look as he tried to keep a straight face.

“Hell no.”

Savannah stared at him in confusion as she reached over and scratched behind the dog’s ears.

“What’s wrong with those names?”

Jacob made a face.

“If I have to explain then…”

Savannah rolled her eyes as she elbowed him in the side.

“I already know. Too girly.”

“How about a compromise.” He told her as she folded her arms across her chest.

“Go ahead. I’m listening.”

“Carolina Cassidy. I like the ring it has to it, don’t you?”

Savannah had to admit that was a little catchy and nodded before she turned to the woman.

“What are your regulations for adopting them?” she asked and the girl smiled.

“Well, first there’s a home visit so we can check out where their new homes are. That usually takes about a week or maybe less. It really depends on the family actually, but you two seem like nice people so I’ll see if I can speed up the process.”

Savannah gave her a bright smile.

“That would be great. Thank you.” Savannah reached over to scratch the puppy behind the ears while the woman asked if the next day would work for the home visit.

“That’s fine.” He nodded. “One of us should be there.”

“I’m Melanie by the way.” The woman smiled brightly at them.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Jacob and this is my wife Savannah.”

Melanie smiled at them both; she liked them already.
