The masks we wear to hide eyes that seek acceptance.
The Masquerade

          How could this happen?

Dying words on ruby lips—
tattered remains of love.
Last breath sacrificed by the dove—
unhealing wound…blood drips.

          Where am I?

Devoured by the dark—
air hushed, choking…still,
I feel them—see them—shadows kill—
Trapped, watching reflections, outstretched and stark.

          What have you done?

Splintered upon the ice—
Scorched, reaching to Hell’s fire,
Silenced by soul’s desire—
…you have destroyed me thrice.

          Who are you?

Death kisses the air—
He lingers to wipe my tears,
my eyes reflected within a hollow prayer—
Arms press against the skin…I wear His mask to the fair.

          Am I safe now?
