Camp Lejeune, North Carolina
A 246 square mile military installation, situated in Onslow county North Carolina, most of which is swampy land. Is one of the major amphibious training bases in the country, with its 16 miles of beachhead available for use by the forces of the U.S.M.C. stationed there.
When you first arrive at this base you come through one of the several front gates and begin the five mile drive to the mainside of the base. The forests look very peaceful and serene when you first arrive there. What you have no idea of until later is that there are parts of the serene forrest you will not be able to tolerate for one reason or another.
Once you arrive at Mainside, you notyice the red brick buildings which pepper the property. These are the Barracks holding the infantry and support units stationed there. Even though the architecture is quite nice, you will find the rooms as cold and unfeeling as any building you could ever enhabit.
As you notice how they are situated, you may or may not notice that all the buildings are arranged in a ‘U’ formation around a central courtyard, which will be used for assemblies and other events, like air duty. For those of you not familiar with this duty, it is a duty which means if anything happens anywhere in the world where the us marine corps is needed to assault or defend, you will be the one to go. Simply put you cannot leave the base, nor have any alcohol at all, even going to the PX is strictly monitored., Your freedoms arebasically suspended while you are the alpha on this duty. You will learn to hate this because there are a lot of all night assemblies, which are used to test your readiness for combat. It is quite unlikable, but rest assured it does end.
But the worst part of the base is the swamps that you will undoubtedly be in at some point or another, during the cold and the hottest part of the years. Eacch season brings its own troubles. Well the cold in the winter, in Lejeune will get so cold you wont feel your body for a week at a time. Luckily you will be moving a lot and you wont notice it so much.
The heat during summer, on the other hand will destroy you.it will bring all of the mosquitos right to where ever you are in the swamp. Then when you think the mosquitos, and the horseflies weren’t enough. It will rain, sometimes lightly, some time heavier, and sometime torrentially, then the sun will come back out, bringing with it different little creatures who wish to say hello to you, Like snakes of all kinds, a few big cats as well, oh if I fogot t mention more mosquitos, if you had any blood left, they will take it.
To have fun, when your off, there is an ‘E’ club on base. Its not bad, it has few people in it, and your chance to get a date will drop by triple digits when you walk into this sixties inspired decorated buildings. While your there you can buy food, and beer and drink to your content… for a price. Me? I was one of the few marines who got lucky behind an eclub, but that is a story for another ti
