A Valentine no later than Alice's rabbit...
Life's adventures always called you out of dreams
beyond safe harbors, to glide upon waves
straight into sunsets, beneath star-drenched skies
and morning mists...
Sometimes, I see the width of a wide Pacific
in your eyes,
hear the crash and fury of waves against lonely shores
in your voice
the ageless and restless rise and fall of tides
in every breath you breathe
and still...I feel land-locked, listing like a typhoon-tossed
castaway upon some forgotten island
until you pull in, drop an anchor
returned, from voyages gone beyond the sun.
With songs of seabirds, and whale-spray drenched
in secrets I'll never know
sails wrapped on every mast
charts and maps scattered on a captain's table
to know the curve and swerve across a planet
and feel her dance outside of heaven...
and into my heart
that knows no better adventure than this.
Little Sailor, you sail away and back again,
upon each and every waking dream
and all the love beyond any horizon
of imagination's delight.
This foreign shore awaits your footsteps
rocks and sands reach out for you
and can it ever please your eyes?
A lighthouse lonely light
a foghorn's ancient call
a windswept shore
each wave, like a long goodbye...
or a planet's momentary kiss,
the one that moves through moonlight
a shadow's dream...
