Friends are the family you choose.

When you choose friends they oft will be
a secondary family.
It’s not the one in which you’re born,
(for there the ties are sometimes torn),
but may just suit you to a tee.

So then the branches of life’s tree
will gather light most eagerly,
and there will be a brighter morn
when you choose friends.

By God there is biology--
but as to choosing friends you’re free
to smell the roses when forlorn
despite the danger of the thorn.
Still risk is worth the wealth of glee
when you choose friends.

15 Lines (Rondeau)
Writer’s Cramp Winner

(The rondeau is composed of fifteen lines, eight to ten syllables each, divided stanzaically into
a quintet, a quatrain, and a sestet. The refrain consists of the first few words or the entire first
line of the first stanza, and it recurs as the last line of both the second and third stanzas.
Two rhymes guide the music of the rondeau, whose rhyme scheme is as follows
(R representing the refrain): aabba aabR aabbaR.)

Written as per the quote: “Friends are the family you choose.”
