Politics and the people.

He is a well-dressed gladiator
making promises his business,
stumping for votes,
taking advantage
of political gridlock...
(and somewhere in a red
state a frail widow fills the
  hummingbird feeder only
  to see squirrels devour seeds,
  and somewhere else on ghetto
  streets a popsicle wrapper
finds its way among other litter,
  oil and grease, used condoms,
  syringes, homeless, the reeking
of social misery, and many places
east and west where old time
  religions fork the gullible
with the tines of “believe or else,”
  convincing them to sacrifice their
  humanity, their morality, their
  individuality, urging them to dance
  like marionettes stringed by those
  with charisma and hundred dollar
haircuts, and still at sea a plastic
  bottle
drifts sans label, sans any
rolled up note inside with SOS...
  a sad keepsake of the
  human condition.)
