Memory persists where second chances do not exist. For a contest prompt.
If I could only...

Somber shadows
chased like vanishing oases
by blossoming daybreak...
Your chest gently heaving
as we kissed above sparkling brown sand...
The tide rising,
sending us away
to meet again...

If I only knew...
Trembling hands
Feeble hearts
Two tender minds --
souls finding unison
until that night.
Your eyes ablaze...
A crystal moon shimmering,
fading behind transparent
curly black masses,
faint beams escaping,
finding my eyes
now weary from memory...

If I only knew...
it would be the last time,
our hands would touch,
our hearts and minds,
souls in unison...
Our yesterday
is miles away,
speeding faster,
chased by foggy memory.

If I only knew...
Pull the collar up.
Pull the wool tighter.
A sea side yard
of stone obstacles eyes hide
except one
engraved deep on memory --
gray, silent.
a heart,
one mind
and lingering soul
in disunity,
begging, pleading.
If I knew it would be the last time
I would see you
