Sad to see the holidays end
I WANT TO KEEP THE TREE

Kathleen McNamara

As a child I always wondered
why parents were always glad
for the holidays to be over
they wondered why we were sad

The end of the Christmas holidays
such a bittersweet time of year
tucking the Nutcrackers off to rest
I thought I saw them shed a tear

The lights on my tree glowed brighter
as if it wanted to say
“It has been wonderful playing dress up,
and it’s here that I want to stay!”

The grown up me sure understands
the way things ought to be
but deep down there’s still that little girl
who wants to keep the tree.
