a remembrance
When the seasons change so changes how I remember you
In the spring when life begins anew, I remember how you loved the flowers so
how you cared for them, helped them grow
The birds would come to the feeders you'd provide
you knew each by name and marvel how well they would fly
Most folks found the squirrels a nuisance, little pests
you saw entertaining clowns at their best
All came from God, were sent to entertain and sing
that's how you saw them, gifts from your King
When summer brings it's storms and heat
I remember your fear as the lightning would streak
you'd laugh and say how silly it was this fear of yours
"Gods work," but still you'd not sit by an open door
And in the gardens you'd work, your skin taking on that shade of pink
the sweat trickling down and into the soil it would sink
Still you would work pointing out new weeds to attack
praying all the while they wouldn't come back
A glass of iced tea, moments in the shade, then a return to the work
before the end of another day
Fall is especially painful for it is when I see the flowers vanish into the ground
birds began to leave, not many around
The squirrels are busy working on their nests, the days are shortened
night comes too soon bringing with it a chill from winds of the north
It's then I'm reminded of when I watched you give up the struggle and go
to where seasons never change, full of gardens, and so
when winter covers this earth, I take time to reflect on like every living thing I see
life continues on to bring each new season, with beautiful peaceful memories.
