People are hard to understand
We are brothers and sisters,
I'm told.
And believing,
I've tried to peruse you
like books on a shelf,
to read you through.

But your plots evolve,
shift just beyond
peripheral vision.
I snatch familiar phrases
that seem to mean
different things to you
than to me.

I long for interpreters,
seer stones to focus
ebb and flow of story,
to teach me your arc
and what hopes draw you
toward denouement—
motivations you both hide
and foreshadow.

Yet you escape me.
I sit pondering
your faded illustrations,
searching for family resemblance.
