 We Were Kings  (E)
Entry for Lexi's Poetry Challenge 12-25-2016
#2106457 by Chris Breva

We were kings who wandered from afar
We were in search of the promised child
We followed the bright and shining star
And found him in a town lowly and mild.

We were kings who had known no lack or want
Yet inside we were lonely and in need
Our love for the chosen one knew no daunt
We knew not that for us he would soon bleed.

A little child laying in a manger
The Savior of the whole human race
A man like which none was ever stranger
A man so full of mercy and of grace.

We were kings who reigned down here below
His kingdom was the one we sought to know.

Shakespearean sonnet

14 lines

iambic pentameter

Prompt: We were kings
