A comfortable bay window seat
overlooking the tree shadowed pond
quilted pillows and steaming coffee
wrapped in her mother’s knitted afghan
enjoying the peace of a late winter dawn
Some mornings shared with a red fox
walking the pond edge
leaving his tracks
in a fresh fall of snow
On the leafless limb of an oak
the scarlet flash of a cardinal
and on the rarest of occasions
a majestic buck, heavily antlered
wearing a winter dulled coat
lurking at the forest edge
This morning, the forest silent
the landscape holding its breath
lead gray skies showing the answer
the telltale signs are there
The early gold sunrise
barely visible
peaking through winter bare trees
fights a losing battle
with the lowering gray skies
it will not be long
snow will soon fly
Pulling the afghan tighter
savoring the morning coffee
a smile lights up her face
“A snow day”
such a delicious thought
she would enjoy it
watching the snow
from her sacred space
