Broken glints of moonlight shattered over the lake’s rippling surface, forming tiny fish made of silver.
The beauty of the moment wasn’t lost on Tom as the water settled back into a mirror smooth surface. He tilted his head up to the sky to study the blazing stars. They stared down at him in silent judgment even as the sun slept below the surface of the horizon, dreaming dreams of the day to come.
No, the sun would rise as it always did, no matter how much he’d love for it to just stay hidden forever. Let the moon rule the endless velvet sky. Let the cold stars stare down at him with their unwinking but silent eyes.
Let this night never end.
He turned his eyes back down to the water, and for a moment he thought he saw a flicker of something white, deep down in the black liquid.
No, it was just the reflected moonlight, he decided as he turned to start the engine.
It wasn’t a final glimpse of a bone white hand sliding out of sight.
