Reflections on a 4-wheeling expedition
Red dust clings to my face
in thick, humid air.
I learn to relax into
the bounce of rough roads.
It jars less than stiff resistance.

Our guide offers fresh coconut
and raw cane sugar to taste,
crushed allspice leaves
and thumbnail-scraped nutmeg
to breathe in.
His smile is like early morning.

I try to fix the moment,
but I know it will escape me

like the smell of newborns
I once pressed close
to my face.
