He takes a chance and declares his love.
The Quest

For years gone by I'd worshiped her,
a maiden wondrous fair,
possessed of knowing eyes of green
and flowing flaxen hair.

Like Alexander, I charged the wall
that guarded her heart's door,
to break it down and thereby win
her love forevermore.

But fickle fate was there that day
to trip me in my haste:
A suitor's ghost held prior claim,
and all my dreams lay waste.

Now sun and moon and stars above
bear witness to my pain.
My heart's now filled with dark despair:
no sunshine - only rain.
