Sparked to life by a sight, sound or scent
cherished or dreaded a double-edged sword.
Whether they comfort or lead to lament
come flooding forth and can't be ignored.

Cherished or dreaded, a double-edged sword
bits of the past, like life's heirloom quilt
come flooding forth and can't be ignored
create feelings of joy, sadness or guilt.

Bits of the past, like life's heirloom quilt–
remnants of romance, fragments of fear
create feelings of joy, sadness or guilt–
though they're unbidden, won't disappear.

Remnants of romance, fragments of fear,
sweet and sour tastes from long in my past.
Though they're unbidden, won't disappear,
they're my trove of treasures and failures vast.

Sweet and sour tastes from long in my past,
parent's and grandparent's stories told,
they're my trove of treasures and failures vast,
times being meek and times being bold.

Parent's and grandparent's stories told,
childhood friends and childhood foes,
times being meek and times being bold,
my hoard of public joys and private woes.

Childhood friends and childhood foes,
whether they comfort or lead to lament,
my hoard of public joys and private woes,
sparked to life by a sight, sound or scent.
