Rainbows and Hammerheads
I never swam with a manatee
nor have I been kayaking
in a Florida paradise,
but my sister has.
I envy her and love her.
She is a heart nurse – “top gun”
If I were to ask her
what she thinks about sharks
she would say, “Watch out!”

There are a thousand rainbows
that appear all at the same time
all in the same place,
a small place,
like a shoe box
or maybe the pillow you dream on
about savage animals in the sea
when suddenly a sound you never heard
swims you with the manatee
or even hammerhead sharks
with rainbow skin
and teeth perfectly symmetrical, white
and a smile of their own,
not the “lit up” face of a child smile
but a smile of their own on their own
fashioned only by God’s hunger
for what is pleasing.

I wished I had never hungered the catch.
I caught what I had never hungered for
or knew existed on this planet
in Sarasota Bay . . .

So long it took to pull it to me
to where nobody cares
about the plate
you are the center of - a raw offering.
Some could not even imagine it
or think it
but it was real.
When I sent you back
there was no frantic fury,
flash or sudden disappearance
but rather a lazy continuance
as if you knew
it was all a mere delay . . .

My brother is a marine biologist
he would dissect you
vivisect and quarter you
exploring for the not yet found disease
or tumor
that might benefit “mankind”.

I deeply admire
and with great respect
my sister and brother
yet in a very special way as well,
shining prisms covering
the hammerhead shark – smiling.
